UVU's Rushton and Romero Named NWCA Scholar All-Americans MANHEIM, Penn. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced the NCAA Division I Men's Scholar All-Americans. Utah Valley's Mahonri Rushton and Jakob Romero were two of 338 student-athletes honored from 78 different institutions. A total of 45 Wolverines have now earned the recognition. "It is a privilege to honor these exceptional athletes for their remarkable accomplishments. Congratulations to all the awardees, and we extend our best wishes for their continued success in their academic and athletic endeavors," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. It marks the second time that Rushton has earned the honor. The McCall, Idaho native is studying biology at Utah Valley. He finished last season 8-9 overall and placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions at 184 with a 5-1 record. He moved down a weight class to 174 and represented Utah Valley at the 2024 Big 12 Championships. Romero redshirted for the Wolverines and finished 11-5 while wrestling unattached. He finished third in his first collegiate tournament, going 4-1 at the Mines Rookie Open, and won the Spokane Open with a perfect 5-0 record while competing in the 141-weight class. |
