Jason Chamberlain Coaching at UVU

OREM — Utah Valley University head wrestling coach Greg Williams has announced the hiring of two-time collegiate All-American and four-time Utah State Champion wrestler Jason Chamberlain to his coaching staff.

Chamberlain, who comes to UVU after spending the last five years as an assistant coach at Fresno State and originally hails from Springville, Utah, will serve as the team's volunteer assistant. He will begin in June, as his first year on staff will be the 2021-22 season.

"Jason is a great addition to our staff. He brings a wealth of experience into the program," Williams said. "Having been mentored by top level coaches at Boise State in college and at Nebraska's RTC while competing internationally, he will be able to bring in some philosophical and technical variety to an already diverse staff.

"He now has a few years of college coaching under his belt, and after talking to him recently about his experiences coaching college wrestlers, it is apparent that his goals to run a successful program align with our own. He will also attract top wrestlers from the western states and particularly in Utah, having built up a reputation of success as a competitor and a coach. We are excited to have Jason join our Wolverine family."

A four-time Utah State Champion at nearby Springville High School, Chamberlain then went on to wrestle collegiately at Boise State University. While competing at Boise State, Chamberlain became a two-time All-American and four-time NCAA qualifier for the Broncos. He was also the national runner-up as a senior in 2013 and previously wrestled his way to a third-place NCAA Championship finish in 2011.

As an assistant for the last five years at Fresno State, Chamberlain helped build a Top 25 caliber program while in Fresno. With 2017-18 marking Fresno State's first year with a wrestling program since 2005-06, Chamberlain was key in helping develop all facets of the newly resurrected Bulldog program. After helping the Bulldogs post an 11th-place Big 12 Championship finish in the team's first year back in 2018, Chamberlain was then key in helping elevate Fresno State to a fifth-place Big 12 finish the very next year (2019) as well as helping the Bulldogs break into the Top 25 in just their second year back.

During his time in Fresno, Chamberlain helped coach 17 Big 12 Conference placewinners, 14 NCAA qualifiers, a pair of All-Americans-Josh Hokit (fifth at 197 in 2019) and Kyle Parco (sixth at 149 in 2021)-and 14 Academic All-Big 12 honorees. He was also key in recruiting during his time in Fresno and helped the Bulldogs rank in the top 10 nationally in attendance for three years in a row.

Also, during his time in Fresno, Chamberlain competed for the Valley Regional Training Center and continues to take part in a number of national tournaments. In 2018, he competed at Final X at 70 kg/154.3 pounds in Lincoln, Neb., after winning the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Rochester, Minn. He then went on to earn a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2019 Freestyle World Cup, as well as place at both the 2019 World Team Trials (third) and the 2019 Marine Corps U.S. Open (seventh).

"I'm really excited to be coming back home to Utah," said Chamberlain. "I was in junior high when UVU first got its wrestling program. It was exciting and everyone in the Utah wrestling community was eager to be involved and support. The Utah wrestling community has always supported me throughout my career even when I was at other programs. So, I can't wait to give back as a thank you."

A 2013 graduate of Boise State with a degree in health sciences, Chamberlain was not only a two-time All-American but also a three-time Pac-12 champion at 149 pounds as a Bronco.

He compiled a 107-23 overall record during his four years at Boise State finishing third at the NCAA Championships in 2011 and was the runner-up at the 2013 NCAA Championships falling by a narrow 3-2 margin to two-time national champion Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State.

Chamberlain earned the 2013 Pac-12 Male Athlete of the Year as a senior and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all four of his seasons. After competing in his first three years at Boise State, he took a redshirt season in 2011-12 and earned a spot on the University World Team after winning the University Freestyle National Championship at 66kg/145.5 pounds.

After his collegiate career was over, Chamberlain continued to compete in freestyle most notably winning the Pan American Championship in 2015 at 65kg/143 pounds. He also claimed the Paris Grand Prix silver medal and qualified for the Olympic Trials in both 2012 and 2016.

"I'm thankful Coach Williams reached out and that he hasn't held a grudge, since I know I broke some hearts going in a different direction rather than coming to UVU in my college and post college careers. But I felt it was necessary to branch out and get myself out of my own comfort level," Chamberlain added. "I've been very fortune to be able to experience all kinds of places and people, cultures and diversity, and have taken lessons from each place in my wrestling, coaching, and off-the-mat experiences. I hope that I can bring that to the community here as well as my wrestling knowledge and help gain more excitement for Utah's only NCAA Division I wrestling program."

Since leaving Boise State in 2013, Chamberlain spent three years coaching and training at the Nebraska Wrestling Training Center in Lincoln, Neb. In addition to training, he coached and learned alongside 2012 Olympic Gold medalist and two-time World Champion Jordan Burroughs. He has also worked with the University of Nebraska wrestling program coaching technique and organizing individual workouts for the student-athletes.

A native of Springville, Utah, Chamberlain was a four-time Utah State Champion at Springville High School from 2005-2008. He compiled a prep career record of 191-2 to hold the state record for most wins as a prep athlete. He earned the Dave Shultz High School Excellence National Award and Asics Wrestler of the Year as a senior in 2008.

He and his wife Abbey have two daughters, Violet and Kitt.

Chamberlain will replace former Wolverine three-time NCAA qualifier and 2020-21 volunteer assistant Kimball Bastian, as Bastian has decided to move on to compete internationally as he'll head to Ohio to compete for the Ohio RTC program.
