Outstanding Freshman Wrestlers for 2006–2007

Spencer Brown
Cottonwood High School, 112 lbs.
GPA: 3.94

School Classification: 4A (1,500 enrolled)

Spencer Brown

Spencer Brown has made dramatic improvements over the past three years.  When he's hot, he's unbeatable.  He's a very technical wrestler, with great skills and deceptive strength.  He's a three-time state champion (once in each style), a two-time District Champ in junior high, took titles at the USA Wrestling Rocky Mountain Regional Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman this past year in Laramie, as well as placing at USA Wrestling Western Regional Championships each of the past two years.  To boot, he was the Outstanding Wrestler for the Lower Weights at the USA Wrestling Rocky Mountain Regional Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in 2006.  Very impressive is his junior-high career record of 42-1 with 32 pins, and is 2-0 against the Outstanding Wrestler from the 4A/5A Junior High State Championships last year, Kaleb Ashworth, and 1-0 against another 4A/5A junior-high state champion, Brock Brown.  Spencer Brown is, indeed, a very promising freshman.

Career Interscholastic Junior High Record: 42-1 with 32 pins, 2005–2006 Wrestling Record: 69-7 with 46 pins (all three styles).

Following is a summary of Spencer's wrestling career so far:

Brock Brown
Payson High School, 103 lbs.

School Classification: 4A

Brock Brown

Brock Brown comes from a prominent wrestling family in Utah, his dad making a mark against international competition.  Brock is a chip off the old mat.  He is a very skilled technician who never seems to run out of steam.  He's a very smart wrestler who never seems to make mistakes.  When he beat the hulk, Raider Lofthouse, at the Payson Junior High Duals, it was an amazing display of technique and determination.  At the U.S. Folkstyle Nationals, he won the title against Kaleb Ashworth, Outstanding Wrestler from last year's 4A/5A Junior High State Championships.

Brock Brown is a very promising freshman.

Following is a summary of Brock's wrestling career so far:

  • Two-Time National Champion, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals

  • Two-Time Junior High State Champion, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships

  • 2006 Team Member, Utah All-Star Team vs. Ohio All-Stars

Kaleb Ashworth
Spanish Fork High School, 112 lbs.
GPA: 4.0

School Classification: 5A (1,765 enrolled)

Kaleb Ashworth

Ashworth is a solid technician with a lot of heart but, above all, he always wrestles smart.  He's one of those that you can see the gears turning all the time that he's on the mat but, when push comes to shove, he's got the moxy to mix it up with anybody.  He won the U.S. Folkstyle Nationals in 2005, then came up short defending his title in 2006 against Brock Brown of Payson in the finals.  He took sixth at the Rocky Mountain National Championships last March after a pretty serious finger injury that ended his day.  But his day to shine was at the 4A/5A Junior High State Championships, where he took the title with a win over that monster Raider Lofthouse of Mountain Crest.  That made it a no-brainer for Kaleb to be named the Outstanding Wrestler for the Junior High Division.

Following is a summary of Kaleb's wrestling career so far:

  • 2006 Silver Medalist, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals

  • 2006 6th Place, Rocky Mountain National Championships

  • 2006 Outstanding Wrestler, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships, Junior High Division

  • 2006 State Champion, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships, Junior High Division

  • 2005 National Champion, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals

  • 2005 Silver Medalist, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships, Middle School Division

  • 2004 State Champion, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

Derek Malan
Weber High School, 112 lbs.
GPA: 3.7

School Classification: 5A

Derek Malan

Derek is good.  He's a technician with explosiveness and speed.  He hits his moves with no holding back, which pays off the vast majority of the time.  He is a four-time 4A/5A Junior High State Champion, as well as a freestyle and Greco-Roman state champion, and won the gold in Greco-Roman at the USA Wrestling Western Regional Championships in 2003.  He took state in freestyle and Greco-Roman last year ahead of two studs: Dakota Payne of Millard and Trae Bennett of Elite, both national champions.  In freestyle, Malan avenged a loss to Bennett the previous year at state.  And those are only a few of the tough opponents he had taken out.  In 2004, he beat the very tough Ryker Vandertoolen of Bingham in the finals for a junior-high state title.  That same year, the only one to beat him when he took silver at state in both freestyle and Greco-Roman was Jaes Jones of Brighton.  I look forward to see how many opponents he lights up his freshman year.

Following is a summary of Derek's wrestling career so far:

  • Four-Time State Champion, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships (2003–2006)

  • Two-Time State Champion, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Greco-Roman (2005–2006)

  • 2006 State Champion, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

  • 2005 Bronze Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

  • 2005 Silver Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

  • 2004 4th Place, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Greco-Roman

  • 2004 Silver Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

  • 2004 Silver Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Greco-Roman

  • 2003 Champion, USA Wrestling Western Regional Championships, Greco-Roman

Colton Cannon
Payson High School, 135 lbs.
GPA: 3.8

School Classification: 4A

Colton Cannon

Colton is sharp.  He has solid technique and is explosive.  He hits his moves hard, he hits them accurately, and he is fast.  In the finals at 4A/5A Junior High State last year, he handled Travis McRae (who had been pinning opponents left and right to get to the finals).  Colton is a three-time champion at the U.S. Folkstyle Nationals, and was named the Outstanding Wrestler at that tournament in 2001.  He is a three-time Junior High State Champion, and placed three times at the very tought Reno World Championships.  I look forward to see how many opponents he lights up his freshman year.

Following is a summary of Colton's wrestling career so far:

  • Three-Time National Champion, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals (2001–2003)

  • Three-Time State Champion, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships (2004–2006)

  • Two-Time State Champion, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle (2003–2004)

  • 2006 4th Place, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals

  • 2005 4th Place, Reno World Championships

  • 2004 Silver Medalist, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals

  • 2003 Bronze Medalist, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships

  • 2003 Bronze Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Greco-Roman

  • 2002 Bronze Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

  • 2001 Outstanding Wrestler, U.S. Folkstyle Nationals

  • 2001 Silver Medalist, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle

Carson Kuhn
Alta High School, 103 lbs.

School Classification: 5A

Carson Kuhn

Carson Kuhn is one of the slickest young wrestlers I have ever seen.  He is smart, level-headed, a fine technician, and never seems to lose his cool.  And it's paid off for him, where he has been racking up credentials on the state, regional and national level for years.  He's won a whopping 10 national tournaments between the three styles, three junior-high titles (including Outstanding Wrestler honors in 2004), and was the UtahWrestling.org Youth Wrestler of the Year in 2004.  The only thing threatening his freshman year of wrestling is his size.  If he hasn't grown since lance season, then he will be giving up a good 20 pounds at 103 (he took state at 80 lbs. at 4A/5A Junior High State Championships last year); but, if anyone can do it, it's this kid.

Following is a summary of Carson's wrestling career so far:

  • Seven-Time National Champion, Freestyle, Greco-Roman, Folkstyle

  • Fourteen-Time Champion, USA Wrestling Western Regional Championships, Freestyle and Greco-Roman

  • Eighteen-Time State Champion, Freestyle, Greco-Roman, Folkstyle

  • 2004 Youth Wrestler of the Year, UtahWrestling.org

  • 2004 Outstanding Wrestler, 4A/5A Junior High State Championships

  • 2003 Champion, World Cup
