I have watched
Jeff for years, coaching against him in some instances, or
just as a fan. Ever since the first
time I've watched him on the mat, I've been impressed with
his athleticism and tactical skill. Jeff is a master
of setting up a shot without you even knowing you're being
set up, often doing it with movement alone. He has been
a standout at some of the biggest tournaments in the
country, and has certainly established himself locally,
winning three state titles in high
school, let alone going undefeated as a junior and finishing his championship match with a second-round fall. Earlier in the season, he was named Outstanding Wrestlers at the Evanston Invitational and the North Sevier Team Camp and was selected for the 1A/2A All-Star team, where he defeated Wasatch's Tanner Sweat 7-1. At the 2011 Rocky Mountain Rumble, he won the championship, pinning Alta star Mark Michels in the finals, after beating Brighton's state champ Nick Runyan 5-3 in overtime. This past summer, he went undefeated at the Reno Summer Duals. His sophomore year, he took state at 130 lbs.,
pinning his way through the tournament to the finals,
where he soundly beat Millard's Matt Tuttle, 8-2. As a freshman, he walked through the tournament with
similar ease, pinning Millard's Kamron Day in the finals.
Both are extremely solid and Jeff's domination was
impressive, to say the least. He has won Outstanding
Wrestler awards at tournaments in multiple styles, and
made it to the finals in tournament the likes of the the
Reno World Championships, Rocky Mountain Nationals and the
U.S. Folkstyle Nationals. He's a multiple-time state champion in
freestyle and folkstyle, and it often ranked among the top
in Utah and the nation. He has a high school record
of 155-9, but has won 389 matches and only lost 17 matches
total since the 2004–2005 season.
Jeff is
aggressive and smart, and an explosive technician, with a
solid backlog of experience enabling him to adapt to any
situation. As I've said each year, he will continue on his path to that
exclusive list of four timers.
