Dusty Hone
Cedar City High School, 132 lbs.

School Classification: 3A

Dusty Hone

Dusty Hone is is a great wrestler and a fine young man.  I have had the pleasure and frustration of coaching against him since the first time he wrestled my son back when they were 8 or 9 years old at the Utah Summer Games.  It has been a real pleasure to see him grow as an athlete and an individual in the time since then.  And if you know anything about Utah wrestling, you know his family.  Dusty is technically solid, and never stops thinking while on the mat.  Many a time have I watched him, thinking that he was going to be taken down, but he somehow managed to move on his butt and keep just ahead of his opponent.  And he's not even in a dentist's chair!  In his high-school wrestling career, he opened and closed with undefeated seasons, while losing only two matches in between, garnering four state titles. In the finals his freshman year, he faced Hurricane standout Josh Pettus and made it look easy, teching him 15-0. This came after pinning Delta's Tayten Babb in the second round to get to the finals. This came after beating Maple Mountain's Grant LaMont at the All-Star Dual. His sophomore year, he pinned Delta's Jose Garcia in the finals, after pinning all but one opponent to get there. This came after beating Panguitch's Jory Owens 8-2 at the All-Star Dual. His junior year, he faced Delta standout Victor Almanza in the finals, defeating him 6-1, after pinning or teching each opponent to reach the finals. His last trip to the finals, he pinned or teched each opponent, to face Jaden Petersen of Pine View in the finals, where he ended his high-school wrestling career with another pin. He followed his fourth state title in high school by taking state in freestyle, where he finished the tournament without a single point being scored against him. Following winning his fourth high-school state title, he went on to make it to the finals that year in the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Iowa, where he lost to Nevada superstar Sean Cannon 2-1. Another highlight to his senior year was when he won The Rumble, defeating Maple Mountain's Taylor LaMont in the finals in a 3-1 decision and also won the Reno Tournament of Champions. (He beat LaMont at the All-Star Dual, as well, in a 3-2 decision.) He had a knack for beating Utah phenoms at The Rumble, winning the tournament his junior year, where he defeated Alta's Matt Findlay (himself a four-time state champ) in the finals, in a 2-0 decision and as a sophomore, where he beat Maple Mountain's Britain Carter (also a four-time state champ) in a 2-1 overtime decision, after beating Findlay 4-2 in the semis. This was actually a payback match, after Findlay beat him 7-4 in the All-Star Dual. In 2012, he won both the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Denver and the Reno World Championships. Also worthy of note was when he took state in freestyle in 2011, beating Box Elder's Shand Hardy in the finals after defeating Herriman's Chandler Strand, Pleasant Grove's Kyson Levin, Davis' Taylor Porath, and Delta's Almanza in that tournament. Prior to high school, Dusty was a four-time Junior High State Champion, and was named Outstanding Wrestler at two of those four tournaments.  He is a four-time National Champion, and twice placed at the Reno World Championships (one of those times, making it all the way to the finals).  He has twice won the Beehive Brawl, in eighth grade, falling short in the finals against Idaho stud Michael Cook (and if you know Michael, you understand).  He is has been ranked in the Top 25 in his age division many times, and each well deserved.  His brains are as much a reason for his good fortune as his athleticism and technique.

2014 State Champion (132 lbs.). 2013 State Champion (126 lbs.). 2011 State Champion (113 lbs.). 2010 State Champion as a Freshman (103 lbs.).

Career Interscholastic Record: 185-2. 2013–2014 Record: 55-0. 2012–2013 Record: 45-1. 2011–2012 Record: 53-1. 2010–2011 Record: 32-0.
