Brandon McBride is
a stud, plain and simple. I've watched him grow as an athlete since he was a kid in freestyle and Greco-Roman, and he has never ceased to impress me. Not only does he have incredible skills, but he is incredibly explosive, executing with the kind of confidence that comes only through absolute certainty that what he is going to do will work. He is also very smart on the mat, knowing when to take a move big, when to play it safe and get the points, when to move in for the kill, when to wait for the opening.
For his last state championship, he faced Britton Gunter
of Box Elder in the finals, finishing him off in the first
round to win his second Outstanding Wrestler award for the
upper weights (he did the same his junior year after
beating Payson star Brady Loveless in the finals.)
This came after he pinned or teched every single opponent
in the tournament. Prior to state, in the All-Star Dual,
he defeated Altamont's Kyle Foy at the All-Star Dual, 5-1.
The previous year, he manhandled Delta's Jaxon Singleton,
handing him a 17-5 defeat. He has been in the finals at USA Wrestling Kids Nationals five times in freestyle, winning two of them, and five times in Greco-Roman, winning three national titles, as well as coming away with a title at the Reno World Championships. McBride won
four high-school state titles in three states, and still
managed to improve during his senior year to go undefeated
(he lost only one match his junior year, which he avenged
at state).
