Buff Wrestlers Shine
by Nick Drake

The Tooele High School wrestling team continues to open the 2004-05 campaign in impressive fashion.

The Buffs recorded seven victories, including five pins, to record an impressive 37-34 Region 11 dual triumph over rival Morgan last Thursday on the Trojans’ home mats.

Tooele also hit the road to Kearns Wednesday and whipped the Cougars 48-28 in preseason dual action.

Tooele also battled to a bronze team finish in the annual Brighton Turkey Invitational tournament Nov. 24 at Brighton High.

Riverton grabbed top team honors and tournament host Brighton grabbed runner-up honors. Tooele earned third place, followed by Cyprus in fourth and Bonneville in fifth.

Buff heavyweight Brandon Kummer garnered first place in his weight division by Tooele tandem Brad Gustafson (135 pounds) and A.T. Cisco (140) took second place in their respective weight class.

The Buffs will find out how tough the Class 3A is this weekend when Tooele competes in the always-tough Wasatch Invitational wrestling duals Friday and Saturday at Heber City.

Buff Coach Codie Miller said his team wrestled well in the Region 11 dual against Morgan last week.

“I feel it was an uplifting and moral victory because the kids are young and it was against a region opponent,” he noted. “I wasn’t quite sure how we would stack up against them. I knew it would be tough but felt we would have a chance to beat them if we didn’t make many mistakes. I felt like we could have won a few more matches without a couple of mistakes. But it was a good win for us and something to build on. I’m looking forward to our team building confidence after each match and practice.”
