Senior Cyler Sanderson, the youngest brother of the
well-known Sanderson brothers, signed a national letter
of intent last week to wrestle for Iowa State
University.
Following a family tradition, Sanderson
will be the final brother to go through the Cyclone
program.
“I’m really excited,” Sanderson said. “it’s a nice
place, a good university and they have a really good
team.”
Sanderson said he also based his decision on the fact
that Iowa State’s program will help him reach his goals.
“They have a good program,” he said. “They had two
wrestlers in the Olympics, the head coach was a coach at
the Olympics and another wrestler was on the world team.
It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Even though Iowa State was probably the obvious
choice, Sanderson said he had a hard time deciding,
because he also liked the programs at Oklahoma and
Nebraska.
“It was a hard decision,” he said, “both Oklahoma and
Nebraska have good programs.”
But now, the weight has been lifted.
“It was one of the biggest decisions I will probably
ever have to make, Sanderson added, “it’s a relief not
to have to think about it anymore.”
Sanderson, the number one ranked wrestler (140 lbs.)
in the country, was also the fourth ranked recruit in
the country. So did Cael have an influence on Cyler
going to Iowa State?
“Ya, a little,” Cyler said, “I mean, he is going to
help me a lot. He’s going to show me the things I need
to do to be successful.
“He’s going to be my home away from home.”
With the monkey off his back in choosing a college,
Sanderson said he is looking forward to his senior year
at Wasatch.
“I’m probably going to work harder than I’ve ever
worked so I can be as good as I can before I go to
college,” he said, “it’s going to be a really fun year.”
After going 40-0 last season, Sanderson is hoping to
repeat as a state champion and help the Wasps to another
state title.
“I’m hoping we win state,” he said, “we are going to
do as well as we did last year, we just need to get the
team healthy.
“As long as we do our best, we should do well. We’re
excited to have Coach VomBauer, he is a huge help, an
awesome coach and a great wrestler, so he is going to be
a big help to this program.”
Sanderson, is an honor student at Wasatch, a six-time
all-american (3-time cadet, 3-time junior), a two time
state champion, a double-placer at junior nationals this
past summer, a champion at the Reno Tournament of
Champions and Tiger Grizz Classic and an MVP at The
Clash Tournament. He is the son of Steve and Debbie
Sanderson.
With wrestling season right around the corner,
Sanderson and his teammates are preparing for an
exciting season. It’s only a matter of time until the
mats will be rolled out onto the gym floor.
