High School Wrestling: Cottonwood's
Brown Earns Spot on National Wrestling Team
by Wade Jewkes
Cottonwood sophomore Spencer Brown
recently took first place in the 58-kilo division (127.75
pounds) at the FILA Cadet Greco National Wrestling
Championships.
Brown defeated a total of seven wrestlers
from around the country, ranging from Oregon to New York.
A total of 38 wrestlers were in Brown's weight division.
Brown's win qualifies him for a spot on
the FILA Cadet National Team, which will represent the USA
in the Pan American Championships in El Salvador, July
11-13.
Meanwhile, Brown trains at a local
wrestling club to develop his upper-body strength, which
he considers to be one of his best strengths.
The club wrestling season begins in
February, after the end of the high school season, and
goes through July. As an unknown sophomore, Brown
surprised in the Region 6 championships and took first
place in the 130-pound class. He finished fourth at state.
Club wrestling will take him to a couple
of national tournaments this summer and he is thinking of
going to the international tournament in El Salvador.
