West Valley Wrestler Wins National
Title
Matthew Brown of West Valley City, a member of
Specialized Wrestling Club, won the 105 pound Schoolboy
division Freestyle National Championship during
competition in Menomonie, Wisconsin.
The championships, held June 30–July 3, brought in
wrestlers throughout the country, according to Craig
LaMont, Kids Director for USA Wrestling of Utah.
Brown was one of thee Utahns winning national titles
during the event.
"This was a great showing for Utah," LaMont said.
"It was a long way to go, which really thinned the
numbers of Utahns able to make the trip so soon after
the Western Regional Championships. It pretty much
added up to one tournament two weeks long with those
families going home one or two days before hitting the
road again. That's hard on anyone, let alone these
nine [Utah] wrestlers ranging from nine to 14 years old.
Nonetheless, Utah can really be proud about the state's
showing."
In addition to Brown, Carson Kuhn of Sandy won the 65
pound Freestyle national title, and Jason Chamberlain of
Springville took the 100 pound Greco-Roman title.
Brown also took fifth in Greco-Roman, earning
All-American honors in that event as well.
