The Pleasant Grove wrestling team earned two medals and finished 18th overall at last week's state 5A wrestling tournament at UVSC's McKay Events Center.

Craig Young took third in the 119 weight class, while Brock Nichols came in sixth at 125.

Viewmont (145 points) edged Weber (140.5) for the state title. Of the Region 4 teams, Spanish Fork (107) was the top placer at fifth, with Lehi (101.5) was right behind at sixth.

The Vikings earned 32 points and posted an overall mark of 11-12 for the three-day event.

Young scored 19 of the Vikings' tournament points. Young pinned Alta's Mark Michaels in first-round action.

After Davis' Zak Baker bested him in the quarterfinals, Young battled his way through the consolation bracket, beginning his rebound with a 7-3 win over Taylorsville's C.J. Coggins.

Young pinned Skyline's Bret Clapier, then bested Fremont's Trae Bennett by 6-3 decision to reach the third-place medal match against West Jordan's Devon Pariaso. Young defeated his Jaguar foe by major decision 12-2.

After losing to Nate Larsen of Viewmont in first-round action, Young pinned Clark Sasine. Taylorville's Jared Pieper eliminated Young in a third-round consolation match.

Nichols posted an 11-9 win against Ryan Zumwalt in the first round. Quarterfinal foe Todd Smoot of Davis defeated Nichols 9-3.

Nichols' 3-2 win over Hillcrest's Santino Pressley and his 7-3 defeat of Skyline's Jason Winward put him into the medal rounds.

After tipping first-round opponent Jed Craner of Fremont 2-1, Alex Nicholes got defeated 3-2 by Hunter's Colton Griffiths in the quarterfinals.

Though Nicholes outlasted Matt Waldron of Davis 5-1, Chase Stiltson eliminated the Viking in overtime by a score of 5-4.
