The Lone Peak wrestling team earned one state title and
three other medals and finished 11th overall at last
week's state 5A wrestling tournament at UVSC's McKay
Events Center.
Paul Johnson joined some very elite company as he won
his third consecutive championship, this year in the 130
weight class.
Johnson said that's a feeling that never gets old. He
mounted the top of the podium for the third time by
defeating West Jordan's Collin Grant in a close match
5-3. The senior was only ranked third entering the
tournament.
"For this one there was a lot more pressure," he
explained. "Since I'd taken it twice before, people
expected me to take it again. Before it didn't matter
whether I won or lost, but this was my last chance in
high school.
"I've wrestled him twice before, but I just let
nothing get to me. I wanted to go out with a win,"
Johnson added.
Though Grant thrice escaped from Johnson's hold, he
never pulled ahead of the Knight. Taking a 2-0 lead,
Johnson countered every move Grant made at either taking
him down or reversing him.
Zane Mendenhall took second in the 171 weight class,
while Chase Stilson came in fifth at 145 and Tyler
Curtis at 215 finished sixth.
Viewmont (145 points) edged Weber (140.5) for the
state title. Of the Region 4 teams, Spanish Fork (107)
was the top placer at fifth, with Lehi (101.5) right
behind at sixth.
The Knights earned 83 points, just eight points out
of eighth place, and posted an overall mark of 20-14 for
the three-day event.
Every Lone Peak qualifier won at least one match, and
all but one was victorious at least twice. Half of the
Knight qualifiers placed, and three others were
eliminated in the last match before the placement
rounds.
Mendenhall was Lone Peak's other state finalist. He
vied with Spanish Fork's Kyle Weight for a championship
medal.
Weight took a 3-0 lead the in the first period of the
close affair, and he kept Mendenhall from catching up.
All of Mendenhall's points came on escapes. Weight won
the match 5-2.
Lone Peak coach Kimball Cluff said, "Both Paul and
Zane wrestled well. Zane, for one, didn't give up. He
and the Spanish Fork kid had been battling back and
forth all season."
