OREM — Adam Fager left no doubt as to who the best
189-pound wrestler in Utah is. The Layton High senior
tore his way to the state championship with pins to get
to the finals and then an overwhelming 16-5 win over
Fremont’s Austin Storey to capture the title. “I was
pretty happy with the way I wrestled,” Fager said. “I
wanted to get out there and make sure I left nothing to
chance.”
Fager finished his senior campaign 40-0 with
his second consecutive state title.
“It’s nice to win two in a row, but this is all a
step toward my real goal of being a national champion.”
Fager is planning to compete in the senior nationals
next month. Utah grapplers have had success at the
nationals over the past few years with two champions a
year ago.
Fager believes a big part of his success is due to
his brother Jon being his head coach.
“Jon knows just how to push my buttons,” Fager said.
“He knows how to push me and no one else could have been
a better coach for me than my brother.”
During his finals, Fager had Jon and his father in
his corner coaching him to the title.
“It was great to have my father and brother there
because they are always in my corner, in wrestling and
in my life,” Fager said. “They are the people I can
always turn to when I need something so it was a great
feeling to know they were over there for me.”
With the next national rankings set to come out soon,
Fager should be listed among the top 10. After tearing
through the local competition, Fager also won the Tiger-Grizz
Tournament in Idaho by defeating the then-ninth ranked
ranked wrestler in his weight class, a young man from
Texas.
“I’m excited to keep training and go out to nationals
and win it.”
