Payson Cruises to Wrestling Win
by Brian E. Preece
SPRINGVILLE — On Senior Night, Red Devil
wrestling superstar Jason Chamberlain put on a show as the
No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country dominated Payson's
McCade Ford 26-11.
The senior and returning three-time state
champion executed 13 flawless takedowns and got a standing
ovation from the home crowd.
Unfortunately for him and the rest of the
Springville faithful, that was one of the few Red Devil
highlights as the visiting Lions clawed to a resounding
48-20 victory over their Region 7 rivals.
Freshman Brady Loveless got the Lions
going in the first match of the night at 160 pounds and
earned a major decision over Bryan Beardall 11-3.
The Lions kept rolling as Hesston Parkin
and Norman Adams both secured second-period pins at 171
and 189 pounds, respectively.
Add this to a forfeit victory at 215
pounds for Jordan Clements, and the Lions led 22-0 before
the Red Devils got on the board with a pin at 285 pounds
by Aaron Turley.
Springville picked up another pin at 103
pounds by Steve Brown to cut the Lion lead to 22-12, but
Payson won the next two matches with Tito Ortiz and Brock
Brown claiming pins and the Lions had the dual in hand.
Springville went into the dual without two
of their better wrestlers. Freshman Austin Frazier will
miss the rest of the season with a broken wrist and
135-pound returning state champion Hayden Petersen
sprained his elbow at the Rocky Mountain Rumble the
previous weekend and will miss action until the region
meet in just over two weeks. Without these two wrestlers
to break the Lion momentum, the Red Devils had little
chance.
In one of the better matches of the night
Payson's Colton Cannon decisioned Caleb Christen 9-7.
Christen led 3-2 going into round two where he was then
promptly turned by Cannon.
Leading 4-3, Cannon seemed in control, but
as he tried a roll-through or "suicide" cradle, Christen
caught him on his back for two points reversal and two
points near fall before Cannon reversed Christen to regain
control. The round ended 7-6 in favor of Christen.
However, Cannon earned an escape and a
takedown with just over 40 seconds left to win the match.
"It was a tough match," said Cannon. "I
had to work hard to set up a lot of things. He's a tough
kid. When I went to my back I didn't panic."
The 145-pound division is setting up
perhaps to be the premier weight class in Region 7 with
Cannon, Christen and Mountain View's Clay Frost all
returning state placers.
Other winners for Payson were Jeremiah
Guzman at 130 pounds, Jace Harmon at 135 pounds and
Taggart Miller at 152 pounds while senior wrestler Rick
Wirsch, a transfer from Timpview High School as result of
the school dropping the wrestling program, earned a 10-4
win for the Red Devils over Payson's Austin Riding.
