Mountain Crest Won't Repeat as Champs
by Chhun Sun
WEST JORDAN — So the Mountain Crest
Mustangs couldn't successfully defend their title at the
West Jordan Duals Friday night.
But it was all part of wrestling coach
Davie Swensen's plan.
Plus, all their studs weren't even there.
Despite edging Springville in the first
dual match - which also marked the return of Jason
Chamberlain, the No. 1 wrestler in the country, in a month
- the Mustangs lost to West Jordan 37-34 in the next
matchup.
Jaguars coach Larry Jaramillo wasn't
bragging about the win. He knew that Mountain Crest was
without three of its best wrestlers — including Raider and
Ethan Lofthouse, brothers who were state champions last
season.
We were missing some pretty good kids,"
Swensen said. "But that's all right. I don't want to worry
about the ones that aren't here."
The ones that competed Friday night at
West Jordan High did an impressive job holding off
Springville. Anthony Trippler denied Chamberlain his first
pin in more than a month as Trippler eventually lost in a
14-3 decision in the 140-pound match - a Chamberlain pin
would have granted two points for the Red Devils.
"I don't think I wrestled all that great,"
Chamberlain said.
Mountain Crest's Ethan Reed then went on
to win the last match, and the Mustangs escaped with a
33-31 victory.
And though the Mustangs lost against West
Jordan — remember they were without key wrestlers —
Swensen said some of his junior varsity athletes finished
the day with valuable experience against upperclassmen.
Someone's going to get a nice trophy," he
said. "You know, that's nice. But nobody's going to
remember who won that trophy in a couple years. People
remember what happens in February [when the state
tournament takes place]."
The dual tournament continues today at 8
a.m.
