Prep Wrestling: Heralded Star Will
Return to the Mat
by Chhun Sun
The high school wrestling community in
Utah knows about Springville senior Jason Chamberlain and
his return to the mat. It's perhaps the most-anticipated
event of this weekend's West Jordan Duals - mainly because
Chamberlain hasn't grappled competitively for more than a
month now.
"He'll be returning and everyone wants to
see him," West Jordan coach Larry Jaramillo said.
The Boise State-bound wrestler is excited,
too.
He can once again defend his No. 1 ranking
in the country (according to Wrestling USA Magazine) and
improve his 155-2 overall high school record.
Chamberlain sprained his right knee in one
of the best matches of the season, on Dec. 1, when Dak
Adamson traveled from Dallas for a shot at Chamberlain and
the national exposure the Texan would get if he came out
the winner at the Layton Invitational.
Both athletes got hurt in the contest in
which Chamberlain won an 11-5 decision but also
experienced his first takedown in a year. Adamson learned
immediately that he re-injured the left shoulder that
sidelined him from wrestling for nearly two years, while
Chamberlain had trouble the next morning getting out of
bed.
Chamberlain has since been putting in
light practices to recover, in addition to some jogging
and biking.
While he waited for his return,
Chamberlain went with his team to the recent Reno
Tournament of Champions, where he proceeded to coach his
teammates.
"He has kept really busy," coach Justin
Judkins said.
