Jordan Freestyle Wrestling braved the weather to travel
to Rock Springs, Wyo., and compete in the Top of the
Rock Invitational in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling
April 9-10. The eight young athletes garnered 13 medals
between the two styles, the 2nd-place team trophy and a
Fastest Pin Award.
"It was a great tournament, well run, as usual," said
Jordan Freestyle Wrestling Coach Bill Kilpack (III).
"But the guys really showed their stuff. I filled out
the team competition roster really just to see how we
sized up against the winners. I never expected a club
with 95 percent first-year wrestlers to win anything.
These guys wrestled their guts out."
All eight competitors in the freestyle tournament took
home medals. Of the eight, three were gold, led by
William Kilpack of Sandy, Midget (ages 9 and 10) 60
lbs., who beat all opponents by fall or technical
superiority (gaining a lead of 10-plus points) without
allowing a single point to be scored against him; Wesly
Orton of Midvale, Midget 50 lbs., who also beat all
opponents by fall or technical superiority; and Riley
Tatum of West Jordan, Flyweight (ages 6 and Under) 40
lbs., who won his championship match by technical
superiority with a score of 12-1.
Winning silver was Kyler Machan of West Jordan, Midget
55 lbs. Winning 3rd-place bronze medals were Tyler
Schwenidman of South Jordan, Bantam (ages 7 and 8) 45
lbs., and Bryce Lindsey of Clearfield, Schoolboy (ages
13 and 14) 95 lbs. Taking 5th-place bronze medals were
Tayler Johnson of Draper, Bantam 55 lbs., who also won
the Fastest Pin Award for his division, with an
11-second fall; and Daniel Bactista of Kaysville, Novice
(ages 11 and 12) 70 lbs.
The team took the 2nd-place trophy for earning 171 team
points, edging out the host team, who earned 144.
Of the five Greco-Roman medals earned, two were gold,
earned by Tayler Johnson, Bantam 55 lbs., and Wesly
Orton, Midget 50 lbs. Taking silver in Greco-Roman were
William Kilpack, Midget 60 lbs., and Kyler Machan,
Midget 55 lbs. Taking 3rd-place bronze was Daniel
Bactista, Novice 70 lbs.
Also competing from Jordan Freestyle Wrestling in the
Greco-Roman tournaments was Tyler Schwendiman, Bantam 45
lbs.
Other Utah wrestlers on the Jordan Freestyle competition
roster were Logan Wisener of Roosevelt, gold medalist at
Midget 87 lbs.; and Chance Grant of Roosevelt, gold
medalist at Schoolboy 105 lbs.
