Scan of ArticleDec. 20, 2007: Spanish Fork Press

SF Wrestling Dons
by Steve Wilson

Riding the wave of an impressive second place finish at last week's prestigious Wasatch Duals in Heber City, the improving Spanish Fork Dons completely took apart the hapless Timpanogos Silver Wolves 65 -12 on the Dons home mat on Thursday, Dec 13. The Dons never broke a sweat in this laugher as they sliced and diced the Silver Wolves winning twelve of the fourteen matches on the night.

One of the non-victories was a forfeit at 112 pounds and the other was a tough third round loss by the Dons Kade Christensen who was wrestling in his first match of the year.

Picking up pins for the confident Dons were Caleb Ashworth, Jacob Bracken, Kyle Weight, Eric Kitchen and Brock Wilson. Adding to the Timpanogos pain were Traven Gardner and Phil Sorenson who recorded Technical Fall pastings.

Jacob Bracken got the scoring started for Spanish Fork as he met no resistance at 135 pounds by pinning Zach Peck in only 45 seconds of the first round.

Brett Grover picked up a major decision over Timp's Jacob Smith at 145 by the score of 12 to 2 running the team score to 22 to 0 for the Dons. Coach Dave Clark was excited to have the Sorenson brothers back on the mat for his charges as Phil dusted off his togs and joined brother Dave to give the Dons much needed depth as they head into Region IV wars. Inactive all season long, Phil looked in mid season form as he took charge of his 160 pound match from the opening whistle and shutout Tanner Prestwich 15-0 and record a dominating technical fall win.

The Dons co-captain, Kyle Weight, put on a clinic at 171 pounds recording five takedowns before effortlessly pinning Matt Kresge early in the second round.

The back third of the Dons powerful upper weight trio of Eric Kitchen and Brock Wilson refused to take a back seat to Weight by both turning in impressive first round pins at 189 and 285 respectively. The hulkish Wilson nailed the quickest pin of the night taking only 41 seconds to overpower Timp's Garret Coleman.

Closing out the scoring for the Dons were Traven Gardner who was finally able to drop down to 103, Matt Anderson at 119 pounds and sophomore phenom Caleb Ashworth at 125 pounds. The scrappy Gardner was unbelievable as he embarrassed the Silver Wolves Tyler Reese with a first round technical fall thrashing 16 to 1.

Smooth Matt Anderson pitched a 7 to 0 shutout in his 119 pound match against Josh Harmon. Caleb Ashworth ended the pain for Timpanogos by blasting Conner Sugrue with a second round pin after leading 14-2.

Thursday's workout was a bit of a disappointment as surely Coach Clark had hoped the boys from Highland would have offered a bit more resistance for his kids who were looking for a solid tune-up prior to the weekend Viewmont Tournament.

"Timpanogos is down this year and didn't show us a lot tonight" Clark offered. "On the bright side, we got some kids back on the mat tonight that should give us some quality depth as we head into region and state."

The Dons return from Viewmont to entertain early region favorite Lone Peak on Wednesday night before taking time off for the Christmas holiday.
