LAYTON — Viewmont’s Nate Larsen and Layton’s Adam Fager
each picked up victories in the annual Layton
Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday night. The
tournament also had Springville’s Jason Chamberlain put
his no. 1 national ranking on the line against Dak
Adamson of Bishop-Lynch High School of Dallas, Texas.
Larsen, last year’s junior national champion, faced
Mountain Crest’s nationally ranked Raeder Lofthouse.
Larsen picked up the first takedown 20 seconds into
the match and kept Lofthouse in check for the the first
two minute session.
Larsen dominated the remainder of the match with
Lofthouse giving up two escapes to earn a 5-2 win.
“He (Lofthouse) is a prestigious wrestler,” Larsen
said. “I was excited to wrestle him.”
And while Larsen captured this early season
tournament, his goal remains focused on the state
tournament where he finished third last year and first
as a sophomore.
“Of course, there is a process to all of this,” he
said. “But I came here expecting to wrestle hard and to
win. If you’re going to a tournament you need to go and
wrestle hard and go to win.”
With this, his first tournament of the season, Larsen
feels there is room for improvement.
“I felt OK, but I need to work on things and get
better.”
Fager faced Viewmont’s Sam Graham the final of the
189-lb. weight class.
The senior captain all-stater from Arizona who moved
to Utah last year and earned all-state honors here
dominated the match from the beginning earning a pin at
the 2:20 mark of the match.
“I didn’t necessarily have a plan going out there,”
Fager said. “I went out to just wrestle.”
The match also was the first offensive takedown of
Fager’s early season.
Fager was a member of the Layton football team that
went to the state finals, holding off some of the early
season training for the senior.
“If football had any negative it’s been lack of
wrestling conditioning,” Fager said. “I think football
helped me learn about doing things to help the team do
what’s necessary to be successful.”
“I saw a lot of little things that I can improve on
after this tournament.”
In a highly anticipated 145-lb. pound final, two
nationally recognized wrestlers brought their skills to
center stage. Springville (Utah) High’s Jason
Chamberlain put his no. 1 national ranking on the line
against defending 6A Texas champion Dak Adamson.
The showdown turned into more a mere show for
Chamberlain’s skills as the senior dominated Adamson,
11-5.
“I knew I had to wrestle on my feet because he is
better on the mat,” Chamberlain said. “After I got my
escape and takedown I just kept letting him go and
taking him back down to the mat.”
In wrestling, an escape is worth one point with a
takedown being worth two points so the strategy can
double a wrestler’s points.
Chamberlain saw this as just another match in his
career.
“I didn’t do anything to prepare differently,” he
said. “If I wrestle my match I’m pretty confident in my
skills.”
The team championship went to the controversial
Wasatch team, followed by Mountain Crest, Bingham and
Viewmont, which was the top Davis County team.
