Prep Wrestling: Texan Delivers a Scare
by Chhun Sun

In his match against Springville senior Jason Chamberlain, the star wrestler from Bishop Lynch in Dallas provided the audience at the annual Layton Invitational Tournament on Saturday a little suspense and surprise.

But Chamberlain reclaimed his No. 1 ranking in the country - despite suffering an early takedown, which hadn't happened to him in about a year - by defeating his old friend in an 11-5 decision.

Chamberlain improved his overall record to 155-2.

"I just wrestle all the same," Chamberlain said. "I just like to show people what I'm capable of."

The Wasatch Wasps definitely did that, too. With individual championships from Jake Salazar (152), Cole Shafer (171) and Sean Sullivan (285), the five-time defending Class 3A state champs overwhelmed competitors during the two-day tournament and won with 219 points.

Mountain Crest and Bingham finished in second and third with scores of 168.5 and 162.5, respectively.

Back to the Chamberlain-Adamson marquee match: The two hadn't faced each other in four years. Adamson was sidelined from competition due to a left shoulder injury prior to this season.

And the two might not see each other again for a while since Adamson hurt the same shoulder during Saturday's match.

But before then, Adamson - who traveled from Texas just to face Chamberlain in hopes of gaining some exposure by facing the country's best wrestler - gave spectators reason to think upset. About halfway through the first period, he took down Chamberlain.

However, there was no reason to panic. That's what Springville coach Justin Judkins thought, though he did say he was surprised since he hasn't seen an opponent accomplish a feat like that on Chamberlain "for a long, long time."

Chamberlain fought back with three consecutive takedowns before walking away with the victory.

*In the night's biggest match, Springville's Jason Chamberlain, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country, faces Dak Adamson (of Bishop Lynch in Dallas). Despite suffering his first takedown in about a year, Chamberlain wins an 11-5 decision.
