SALT LAKE CITY — Watch out for the ‘Cats. The Woods
Cross Wildcats went into Highland High School Tuesday
night and clawed out two wins against the host Rams
(52-32) and Copper Hills (39-37) before dropping a match
to Skyline (50-22). “I’m very pleased with the effort we
had tonight,” said Woods Cross coach Mark Tate. “We
wrestled pretty well, especially for our first multiple
match of the year. I thought we were aggressive and went
right after things.” Leading the way for the Wildcats
were 140-pounder Zane Watkins and Josh Saavdra. Saavdra
pinned up three opponents while Watkins picked up two
pins and no losses.
“Josh and Zane are very good
wrestlers,” Tate said. “They are hard workers and do all
the things to improve each day at practice and in
matches. “These are two guys who should place very well
come region and state,” Tate said. “They definitely have
the talent and the work ethic.
“If we can stay away from any serious injuries we
should be in good shape.”
The Wildcats have in-creased in numbers and quality
of wrestling and Tate believes the off-season training
and feeder program he has implemented is paying
dividends for his team.
“We have a youth wrestling club now and the kids are
coming into the high school with a background in the
sport, which helps a lot.
“We also have kids who wrestle all year and that is a
very important thing in a sport like this.”
With the luxury of higher numbers, Tate was able to
utilize some of his JV wrestlers against Skyline.
“Being able to give these younger wrestlers
experience is always important.”
