Junior High State Championships Take Athletes to New Heights

Junior high wrestlers converged on Logan and Vernal for the 4A/5A Junior High State Championships and 1A/2A/3A Junior High State Championships. Competition concluded with Spanish Fork winning the 4A/5A joint tournament for the seventh year in a row, and Wasatch, South Summit and Duchesne coming out on top.

Twenty-eight teams competed at the 4A/5A joint junior high state tournament, which was broken into two divisions: junior high (grades 7-9) and middle school (grades 5-7). Spanish Fork took the junior high title for the seventh year running.

Illustrating Spanish Fork's impressive depth, Randy Sorensen (155) was the team's only champion in the junior-high division, although they had athletes in championship matches in eight weight classes (including two in 155, where Sorensen beat his teammate, Kyle Davis).

Named as outstanding wrestlers were Taylor Peacock of Mt. Logan for the junior-high division and Sioeli Fiefie of Mt. Crest for the middle-school division.

The team results for 4A/5A junior-high division are as follows: 1st Spanish Fork; 2nd Brighton; 3rd Northside; 4th Weber; 5th Jordan; 6th Mountain Crest; 7th Mt. Spanish Fork and Brighton topped the middle-school division at 1st and 2nd as well, although the rest of the team results are as follows: 1st Spanish Fork; 2nd Brighton; 3rd Payson; 4th Weber; 5th Rockwall (Fremont); 6th Mountain Crest; 7th Jordan; 8th Sky View; 9th Mt. Logan; 10th Pleasant Grove; 11th Box Elder; 12th Mountain View; 13th Orem; 14th Springville; 15th Lone Peak; 16th Independent; 17th Roy; 18th Bingham; 19th Northside; 20th Central; 21st Timpview; 22nd North Ogden; 23rd Northridge; 24th Brockbank (Salt Lake); 25th Champaign (Salt Lake); 26th Farmington; 27th West Point; and 28th Davis.

Spanish Fork had three champions in the middle-school division, including Kaleb Ashworth (80) who defeated teammate Taylor Edwards; Zach Hendrickson (119); and Kyle Stephens (145). Six Spanish Fork wrestlers appeared in championship matches in the middle-school division.

1A/2AA/5A junior high state tournament was broken into the junior high and middle school divisions. Taking team championships were Wasatch (3A junior-high), South Summit (2A junior high) and Duchesne (1A junior high).

Team top placement appeared as follows in the 3A junior-high division: 1st Wasatch, edging out 2nd-place Uintah by two points (165-163); and 3rd North Sanpete. In the 2A junior-high division, South Summit took top honors with Millard coming in 2nd. In 1A, Duchesne came in 1st with Altamont in 2nd.
Wasatch had six champions, including Trevor Sweat (70), Jake Salazar (120), Ethan Smith (128), TJ Wall (132), Josh Provost (138), Beau Bethers (190), winning six of seven championship matches.

In the middle-school division, Delta was the 3A champion, with Millard winning 2A and Altamont taking the 1A title.
