Utah Prep Wrestlers Honored
by Michael Black
Three high school wrestlers from Utah were
honored this past week for winning national championships
in their respective styles and weight classes.
Springville's Jason Chamberlain, Mountain Crest's Ethen
Lofthouse and Alta's Carson Kuhn all were spotlighted
because of their accomplishments.
The Utah Amateur Wrestling Foundation
honored the standout grapplers at a fund-raising dinner
and auction to benefit the only Division I wrestling
program in the state at UVSC. Chamberlain is a senior and
three-time state champion. He added a national title in
Freestyle at the July tournament to add to his Greco-Roman
national crown. He has committed to wrestle for Boise
State next year.
Lofthouse, a junior, won two national
titles as he captured both the Greco-Roman and Folkstyle
championships. He narrowly missed winning a third title as
he lost in the semifinals of the Freestyle tournament and
had to settle for third.
Kuhn is a sophomore for the Hawks. He lost
to a wrestler from Montana early in the tournament but
came back through and avenged that earlier loss to capture
the national championship. He also reached the finals of
another national title tournament.
Along with the three wrestlers, three
coaches were inducted to the Utah Wrestling Hall of Fame
during the event. The inductees included John Webb, who
coached and Ben Lomond and Weber, Fred Rowland, who headed
up Orem, West and Mountain View, and Ladd Holman, who
coached Delta to eight straight titles in the 1980s.
