Wide-Open Race in Region 2
by James Edward
The opening week of games in Region 2
reiterated what every coach in the region has been saying
— it's a wide-open race.
Alta and Riverton were the lone Region 2
teams to survive the opening week with a perfect 2-0
record. Hillcrest, meanwhile, experienced just how brutal
region play is by losing to both Alta and Riverton
following a 6-1 preseason.
Highly touted Brighton struggled to a
five-point win over Copper Hills and then lost a 89-86
thriller to Jordan. For the 'Diggers, their big victory
over previously unbeaten Brighton came just three nights
after West Jordan dealt them their first loss of the
season.
By the time the state tournament rolls
around in March, there's a distinct possibility the Region
2 champion could have as many as two or three losses.
Alta won last year's Region 2 title with a
13-1 record, and was followed closely by Bingham at 12-2.
The next closest team was Jordan at 8-6.
