by Tom Haraldsen
Olympus High finished 10th at this year’s state 4A state wrestling
championships. The Titans scored 80 points during the two-day event at
Utah Valley State College in Orem. Mountain Crest won the team
championship.
Junior Nic Dejong was the most successful Titan at the meet, taking second
place at 125 pounds after losing to Springville senior Logan Wilson 15-3
in the finals. Along the way, Dejong pinned Spencer Schwab of Mountain
Crest in just 43 seconds in the opening match, defeated Sky View’s Scott
Smith by default in the quarterfinals, earned a 9-5 decision over Payson’s
Brent Thomas in the semis, then lost to Wilson, who was 47-3 this year and
placed second a year ago in the same weight class.
Other Olympus wrestlers who placed in the top six were junior Thomas Lee,
who finished fourth at 160 pounds; junior John VanDenBerg, sixth at 112;
and junior Zach Colton, sixth at 145.
Lee won his first two matches, pinning Josh Cypers of Bonneville and
taking a 10-3 decision over Lehi’s Steen Christiansen before losing to
eventual state champ Colby Kearl of Box Elder. VanDenBerg scored a 9-0
major decision over Mike Coleman of Box Elder and pinned Tyson Hamilton of
Springville. He was then defeated by eventual state champ Wyatt Ray of
Roy. Colton defeated Jake Shelton of Roy in his opening match before
losing to Skyler Korth of Box Elder in the quarterfinals.
