Local Wrestlers Take Top Awards at Classic
Six West Jordan wrestlers came away with medals from the
Norm Sanderson Classic folkstyle and freestyle wrestling
tournament March 3-4 in Pleasant Grove.
Brothers Tanner and Skylar Orton won gold medals in the
freestyle tournament, both of whom won every match by fail
or technical superiority (winning two rounds by 6 points).
Tanner at flyweight (ages 6 and under) 35 pounds and
Skylar at bantam (ages 7 and 8) 45 pounds. Wesly Orton won
gold in the novice category of 65 pounds.
In
addition, Cole Moody (bantam 55 pounds), Caden Maynes
(midget 50 pounds) and Kyler Machan (novice 60 pounds)
took silver.
"This was a good tournament for us, really showing how
some of the guys adjusted after [the tournament] last
week," coach Bill Kilpack said. "We had some wrestlers
come out for their first tournament who really did well
and others who got back on the horse after surprising
upsets last weekend. It's a testament to their character."
Cole Kimball (bantam, 50 pounds), Bryson Kimball (midget
75 pouns) and Justin Schwendiman (novice 65 pounds) also
competed in freestyle wrestling.
The club entered 39 athletes in freestyle and came away
with 23 medals and 24 in folkstyle competition, earning
medals.
