Utah's Mountain Top Wrestling Aiming
Sky High
(Sandy, Utah) Mountain Top Wrestling Club
members competed in the Norm Sanderson Classic freestyle
and Greco-Roman wrestling tournament held March 2-3, 2007,
at Pleasant Grove High School in Pleasant Grove. The club
entered 50 athletes in freestyle and came away with 26
medals, and 28 in Greco-Roman competition, earning 23
medals.
“This was a great tournament for us,
really showing how some of the new guys adjusted after
last week,” said Coach Bill Kilpack (III). “We had some
wrestlers come out for their first tournament who really
did well, others who got back on the horse after
surprising upsets last weekend, and some first-year
wrestlers who got over their shock and awe from last week
and really went to work. It was a great couple days of
wrestling.”
Eleven athletes came away with gold medals
in the freestyle tournament. Taking top honors were Jordan
Harbaugh of South Jordan, Bantam 50 lbs.; Cole Moody of
West Jordan, Bantam (ages 7 and 8) 55 lbs.; Ajax Revels of
Riverton, Bantam 75 lbs.; Benjamin De La Cruz of West
Valley City, Bantam 75+ lbs.; Tayler Johnson of Draper,
Midget (ages 9 and 10) 70 lbs.; William Kilpack of Sandy,
Novice (ages 11 and 12) 90 lbs.; brothers Addison and Joey
Day of Sandy, Addison in Midget 65 lbs., and Joey in
Novice 70 lbs.; and brothers Beau, Jordan and Travis McRae
of South Jordan, Beau in Bantam 55 lbs., Jordan in Midget
60 lbs., and Travis in Cadet (ages 15 and 16) 140 lbs.
Taking silver medals in freestyle were
eight athletes: Riley Noble of Murray, Flyweight (ages 6
and Under) 50 lbs.; Christopher Smith of Murray, Flyweight
55 lbs.; Tanner Orton of West Jordan, Bantam 40 lbs.;
Nathan Lampros of Sandy, Bantam 45 lbs.; Devin Johnson of
Draper, Bantam 55 lbs.; Cody Mecham of Magna, Bantam 75
lbs.; Zayne Sayers of Sandy, Novice 140 lbs.; and Daniel
Purrington of Sandy, Open (ages 18 and Up) 145.5 lbs.
Winning bronze medals in freestyle were
six wrestlers: Damon Tuft, Flyweight 50 lbs.; Skylar Orton
of West Jordan, Midget 50 lbs.; Tyler Schwendiman of South
Jordan, Midget 65 lbs.; Matthew Findlay of Draper, Novice
75 lbs.; Nathan Lamb of Draper, Schoolboy (ages 13 and 14)
115 lbs.; and Brian Harris of Sandy, Open 211.5 lbs.
In the Greco-Roman tournament, of the 23
medals earned, seven of which were gold. Taking top
Greco-Roman honors were Tanner Orton, Bantam 40 lbs.; Jed
Lee of Draper, Bantam 45 lbs.; Beau McRae, Bantam 55 lbs.;
Helaman Suesue of Salt Lake City, Bantam 75 lbs.; Benjamin
De La Cruz, Bantam 75+ lbs.; and William Kilpack, Novice
90 lbs.
Winning silver in Greco-Roman were 12
athletes: Garrick Kilpack of Sandy, Flyweight 45 lbs.;
Devin Johnson, Bantam 55 lbs.; Cody Mecham, Bantam 70
lbs.; Skylar Orton, Midget 50 lbs.; Jordan McRae, Midget
60 lbs.; Tyler Schwendiman, Midget 65 lbs.; Addison Day,
Midget 70 lbs.; Tayler Johnson, Midget 75 lbs.; Jake
Allred of South Jordan, Novice 60 lbs.; Justin Schwendiman
of West Jordan, Novice 65 lbs.; Travis McRae, Cadet 135
lbs.; and Brian Harris, Open 211.5 lbs.
Earning bronze in Greco-Roman were four
wrestlers: Braden Henson of Salt Lake City, Flyweight 45
lbs.; Nathaniel Lampros, Bantam 45 lbs.; Matt Lee of
Draper, Midget 60 lbs.; and Joey Day, Novice 70 lbs.
Also competing in the Flyweight division
were Braden Henson of Salt Lake City, 45 lbs. (freestyle);
and Garrick Kilpack, 45 lbs. (freestyle).
Also competing in the Bantam division were
Hunter Hellander of South Jordan, Bantam 55 lbs.
(freestyle); Bradley Findlay of Draper, 60 lbs.
(freestyle); Jaron Fox of South Jordan, 50 lbs.
(freestyle); Kaden Love of Kearns, 55 lbs. (freestyle);
and Josef Mecham of Magna, 60 lbs. (freestyle).
Also competing in the Midget division were
Connor White of Sandy, 55 lbs. (freestyle); brothers
Garrett and Gregory Lamb of Draper, Garrett at 65 lbs.,
Gregory at 70 lbs. (freestyle); Kadin Hatch of West
Jordan, 70 lbs. (freestyle); Josiah Ortega of Eagle
Mountain, 70 lbs. (freestyle); Garrett Owens-Riddle of
Magna, 70 lbs. (freestyle); and Zane Rasmussen of Draper,
70 lbs. (freestyle).
Also competing in the Novice division were
Jake Allred, 60 lbs. (freestyle); Justin Schwendiman, 65
lbs. (freestyle); Benjamin Conklin of Herriman, 70 lbs.
(freestyle); and MacKelti Kilpack of Sandy, 70 lbs.
(freestyle, Greco-Roman);
Also competing in the Schoolboy division
were Bobby Duncan of Sandy, 105 lbs.; brother Tait and
Tavish Sandness of West Jordan, both at 115 lbs.
(freestyle, Greco-Roman).
Also competing in the Cadet division were
Jordan Drage, 119 lbs. (freestyle, Greco-Roman); and Devin
Sayers of Sandy, 160 lbs. (freestyle).
Also competing in the Open division was
Matt Elkins of Murray, 185 lbs. (freestyle, Greco-Roman).
“This was a good showing, the kids making
improvements and adjustments from last week,” said Coach
Bill Kilpack (Jr.). “They're learning and moving forward.
You can't ask for any more.”
Mountain Top Wrestling Club is a nonprofit
501(c)3 corporation dedicated to providing a venue for
individuals to learn, develop and refine their athletic
skills and abilities; and educating regarding the rules
and regulations of freestyle, folkstyle and Greco-Roman
wrestling. It is open to male and female athletes ages
four and older who live anywhere in the State of Utah.
