An American Fork wrestler won the Region 4 championship belt for the 145-pound class and six others qualified for the state meet during the Thursday league wrestling tournament at Timpanogos.

One of three American Fork wrestlers to reach the championship finals, Jade Anderson found Lone Peak's Zane Mendenhall ready to challenge him for it. A movie-in from Washington State, Anderson built up a 5-1 lead over his Knight opponent during the first two periods.

In the third period, Mendenhall reversed Anderson, but let him go so he could have a shot at taking the Caveman down. However, Anderson wouldn't allow it, winning the match by a score of 6-3.

"I knew this match I had to step it up and take it seriously because I knew it was going to be a close match again," Anderson said. "Overall it was a really good match."

As for his first region meet in Utah, he added, "I went into it and knew I had to take it one match at a time. I felt really good about how I took each match and focused."

Now he has his sights set on the state meet.

The other two Cavemen who competed in the region championship finals were Justin Ballantyne and Jason Day.

In his 103-pound bout, Ballantyne battled Mountain View's Jake Fredrickson to a 2-2 draw in the first period. However, the Bruin battled ahead of the Caveman by a score of 8-2.

Reversing Fredrickson in the second period, Ballantyne went on to get within 8-7. However, the Bruin took him down, then pinned him.

In the 285-pound final, Day battled Spanish Fork's Brady Miller to a 1-1 tie in regulation time. In the overtime phase, the Don took Day down to win 3-1.

Day, Anderson and Ballantyne were three of 13 Cavemen who placed at the tournament. American Fork's sole representative in the third spot was Logan Gerratt at 189, who defeated Sam Ashman of Timpanogos in the placement match.

Taking fourth for the Cavemen were Jason Ballantyne (103), Kyle Kiriyama (112), Andy Kitchen (130) and Jake Horan (160). Kiriyama did not advance to the state meet because there is no fourth-place spot for Region 4 in his weight class this year, but the other three did.

Scott Newman (119), Collin Gerratt (125), Shane Kitchen (152), Kyle Sumsion (171) and Tyler Aston (215) all finished sixth for American Fork.

During the opening round, American Fork got pins from Day, Sumsion, Logan Gerratt, Anderson and Jason Ballantyne. Andy Kitchen and Collin Gerratt had decisions for the Cavemen in the quarterfinals, and Justin Ballantyne posted a technical fall.

The Ballantyne twins faced off in the second round. Justin Ballantyne took his brother Jason down and pinned him before their match could reach its halfway point. Justin went on to the championship round while Jason finished fourth.

In a 285 semifinal match, Day had a strong challenge from Pleasant Grove's Mike Le. The Viking took a 5-3 lead over the Caveman in the second period. Day reversed his Pleasant Grove foe, then pulled ahead 7-5 on a two-point near fall. Le tied the score at seven, only to see Day escape and take him down, winning 11-7.
