The Lehi wrestling team finished a strong second to
preseason favorite Springville in the Region 7 wrestling
meet Friday on its home mat.
The Pioneers won two
weight-class titles and qualified 15 other grapplers for
the state 4A tournament, which began yesterday at UVSC's
McKay Events Center and continues through tomorrow
night.
Lehi's region champions are Jacob Sasser at 152 and
Tucker Nielson at 215.
Finishing second for the Pioneers were Zac Holdaway
(103), Steen Christiansen (160), Dylan Stadel (285) and
Matt Spencer (119). Spencer is ranked third in the state
super rankings but second in 4A behind the Red Devil who
bested him at this meet.
In third place were Cam Phillips (130), Riley
Sullivan (140) and Russell Gardner (189). In fourth were
Brennan Christensen (112), Chad Sloan (145), Ryan
Bennion (152), Wayland McGary (171) and Graham Hunter
(215).
Those coming in fifth included Brady Page (125),
Taylor Savio (171) and Cam Southwick (285). Three others
placed fifth but did not advance because there is not a
fifth-place berth for Region 7 in their weight classes
this year. They are Bryce Phillips (135), Ben Savio
(160) and Brian Nelson (189).
After the Red Devils had won seven straight matches
in the lower weights, Sasser snapped Springville's
streak by beating the Red Devils' Bryan Beardall 13-5 at
152.
In a very close match at 285, Springville's Danny
Hickman squeaked out a 4-3 win over sophomore Stadel.
Stadel is a guy that Lehi is counting on to make some
noise at state.
