Buff Grapplers Take Tough, Contending
Region Loss to Bears

Tooele's Monte Schmalhaus posted the
biggest defeat of the Buffs wrestling region match between
Bear River on Dec. 14, defeating Bear River's Baden
Peterson, last season's 3A second place finisher, 6-5.
Tooele posted seven wins in the match to
match Bear River's 7, but failed to meet the amount of
pinfalls, leading them to a sudden upset losing 42-30.
Braeden Torgensen began the Buffs seven
victories with a pinfall victory, by nailing the Bears'
Chad Scott's back flat on the mat. Buff tandem Josh Austin
and Zeb Hansen also walked from the mat with a win by
pinfall.
Lone THS varsity senior Jake Foster won by
decision (6-2) to aid with decision victories by Jake
Golden (8-7), and Schmalhaus. Buff grappling standout,
junior Daniel Goode, extended his match winning streak to
14-0 with a 4-1 decision.
Buff trio Wally Hendrickson, Chris Heaps
and Jesse Bisseger all suffered tough losses by pinfall as
Chisolm Wooley, Isaac Brown and Nick Buxton, replacing
injured Eric Hernandez, all fell to the mat for losses
themselves tallying the final score.
The Buff JV squad pursued a much more
positive outcome with a 46-33 victory over the Bears.
Travis Gustafson and Mike Trujillo began
the match dominating by technical fall. Glenn Kummer, Kent
Heder, Jai Knighton and Cassity Adams all flattened their
opponents, winning by pinfall.
Buffs Finish 14th in Juab Invite
Daniel Goode led the way for the Buff
squad at the Juab Classic on Dec. 8-9 with a 9-0 record &
eight by pinfall, one by technical pinfall & awarding him
a medal, and a perfect 13-0 record on the season.
The Buff grapplers finished 14th overall
out of 30 teams from Utah, Wyoming and Idaho in 1A-5A
classes.
Tooele finished with a 4-5 record in dual
style format going 3-2 on the first day with wins against
Springville, San Juan and Spanish Fork and losing to Manti
and Preston. On the second day, THS posted a 1-3 record
with a win over Logan and losses to North Sevier, Altamont
and Aberdeen.
Monte Schmalhaus also posted a perfect 9-0
record to help lead the team to it's top 20 placing.
Isaac Brown finished with a 6-2 record,
and as Chisolm Wooley (4-2) and Jacob Foster (5-2) both
finished with strong records.
Zeb Hansen finished with a 5-3 record as
Austin Hansen finished at 5-4. Braeden Torgensen finished
with an eve 4-4 record as the duo of Jake Golden and Wally
Henderson finished at 5-4 and 2-7 respectively.
Josh Austin finished at 3-6 and tandem
Chris Heaps and Jesse Bisseger both resulted with 1-8
records. Eric Hernandez finished with a record of 4-5, but
had to leave due to injury. Nick Buxton and Brady Wice
both chimed with a match a piece, but ended with close
losses.
The Buffs' next match will be the best of
the West tournament at THS on Jan. 5-6.
