Sandy, West Jordan Youth Take Top
Honors at Monster Match Nationals
(Sandy, Utah) — Ten-year-olds William
Kilpack of Sandy and Kyler Machan of West Jordan, members
of Mountain Top Wrestling Club (formerly Jordan Freestyle
Wrestling) both took third-place trophies at the Monster
Match Nationals folkstyle wrestling tournament held Nov.
5-6, 2005, at the National Western Events Center in
Denver, Colo.
"This was a great tournament for the
guys," said coach Wes Machan. "The second of the Rocky
Mountain Nationals series, we got together the two who
really wanted to go, and went for it. William pinned three
kids to get to the finals and we were thinking Outstanding
Wrestler award might be waiting for him. Then he lost in
the championship, to the kid who GOT that award, then lost
a tight two-point decision in the challenge for true
second. Kyler lost one early and had to get his third
place the long way, by wrestling his way back through the
consolation brackets. I'm very proud of how they wrestled.
They are certainly champions and represented Utah well."
Kilpack is a three-time national champion
and a five-time AAU/USA Wrestling All-American. He took a
national championship in Greco-Roman last July at the AAU
Grand Nationals in Santa Fe, NM; two national titles in
freestyle and folkstyle at the State Games of America in
Colorado Springs that same month; and two more
All-American finishes in freestyle and Greco-Roman at the
USA Wrestling Kids Nationals held in Green Bay, Wis., in
early July. At the end of October, Kilpack finished third
at the Gladiator World Championships, the first of the
Rocky Mountain Nationals tournament series. In 2005,
Kilpack was the no. 1 ranked wrestler in Utah, any age
(from 4 to 14), regardless of weight.
Machan is a two-time state champion,
winning titles last April in both freestyle and
Greco-Roman. He finished sixth at the Gladiator World
Championships. In 2005, he was the no. 10 ranked Midget
(ages 9 and 10) wrestler in Utah, regardless of weight and
a team Outstanding Wrestler for Mountain Top Wrestling
Club.
