Two Utahns Capture Titles in Reno
RENO, Nev. — Brighton's Talan Knox and
Provo's Nathan Holt won individual titles Tuesday at the
Reno Tournament of Champions wrestling tournament, while
Wasatch's Carson Brown settled for second after he gave up
a point in the final 15 seconds and lost 4-3 to Kirk Smith
of Centennial, Idaho.
Knox won the 160-pound title with a 3-1
win over Jake McCoy of Eagle Point, Ore., by getting a
takedown in the third period. Holt took the title at 145
by escaping in the sudden-death session of his match with
Tony Webber of Bakersfield, Calif. It was 2-2 when Holt
got the escape and gave Utah its second champion among 14
weight divisions at the tournament billed as the toughest
in the country.
Brighton's Junior Salt, a senior, placed
eighth in the 275 (heavyweight) division.
Wasatch was the highest Utah team
finisher, placing sixth with 135 1/2 points, while
Brighton took 25th with 90 1/2 . Alamosa, Colo., took
first with 159 1/2 points.
Springville was 29th, while Provo was 38th, Lehi 39th,
Ogden 40th, Bear River 44th and Carbon 91st.
