After participating in the 8-team Carbon Duels at Carbon
High School, the Emery Spartan wrestling team returned
to Castle Dale to host the North Sanpete Hawks in the
opening of region action. North Sanpete, a perennial
wrestling power, overpowered the younger Emery team
58-15.
Wrestling well for Emery against the Hawks were
Steven Giles and Jex Jensen, as each had a second round
pin of their opponent. Mike Jones decisioned his
opponent 9-2. Luke Stoddard was decisioned 10-9 and
Tyler Swenson was decisioned 8-4. All other Spartan
wrestlers were pinned by their Hawk opponent.
In Price the previous weekend, Emery opened the
season going 4-4 against their opponents in the
tournament.
Emery defeated Monticello 42-36, North Sanpete JV
69-6, Grand 54-30 and Milford 48-9. Emery lost to
Duchesne 45-18, Logan 37-36 and Carbon 45-33.

against Carbon.
Steven Giles, at 130 pounds, led Emery as he pinned
all seven of his opponents. He had three pins in the
first round, three pins in the second round and only his
Carbon opponent made it into the third round before
being pinned.
Three Emery wrestlers went 6-1 in the tournament. Jex
Jensen, at 135 pounds, had four pins and was decisioned
by Logan in his loss. Luke Stoddard, at 171 pounds, had
five pins and was also decisioned in his loss at the
hands of a Milford wrestler. McKay Allred, at 103
pounds, had three pins and was also decisioned in his
loss to a Duchesne wrestler.
Wade Bohn, at 189 pounds, had pinned his opponents
from Monticello, Duchesne and Logan all in the first
round. He decisioned his North Sanpete to take his
record to 4-0 before he had to forfeit his last three
matches as he dislocated a knee.
Three wrestlers finished with 4-3 records. Landon
Huntsman at 140 pounds, Tyler Swenson at 145 pounds and
Mike Jones at 152 pounds each won four.
Others wrestling for Emery were Jaden Bagley at 112
pounds, Waldo Espino at 119 pounds, Justin Miller at 160
pounds, Ty Thomas at 215 pounds and Jacob Begay at 275
pounds. Bagley and Miller each won three matches and the
others won two each.
