Mountain Top Wrestling Members Net 29 Medals at Box Elder Wrestling Tournament

(Sandy, Utah) — Mountain Top Wrestling Club (formerly Jordan Freestyle Wrestling) made the journey to Brigham City, Utah, to compete in the Box Elder freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling tournament at Box Elder High School, earning 31 medals in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Feb. 25-26, 2005. In freestyle, 30 wrestlers competed, earning 19 medals. In Greco-Roman, 13 athletes competed, earning 10 awards.

"This was a great followup to last weekend, said Coach Bill Kilpack (III). "It was a much larger tournament " about 30 percent more kids " but the guys held strong, earning four fewer medals than last week with two fewer wrestlers from Mountain Top. There were some specific weights as tough as anything in the country and our team leaders came out on top in them. It was a great way to show everybody that the name has changed, but we are the same quality program that we always have been."

Of the 19 freestyle medals earned, Mountain Top team members took seven gold. The team was led by William Kilpack of Sandy, Midget (ages 9 and 10) 65 lbs., who won his championship match by technical fall (gaining a 10-point lead) with a score of 10-0, after winning every freestyle match by fall or technical fall and only allowing two points to be scored against him in the tournament; first-year wrestler Tanner Orton of Midvale, Flyweight (ages 6 and under) 35 lbs., won his championship match by technical fall with a score of 10-0; Jordan McRae of South Jordan, Bantam (ages 7 and 8) 50 lbs., won his gold-medal match by technical fall; Tayler Johnson of Draper, Bantam 60 lbs., won his gold-medal match by fall; Kyler Machan of West Jordan won his gold-medal match with a 30-second fall; Wesly Orton of Midvale, Novice 60 lbs., won his championship match be decision with a score of 13-4; and first-year wrestler Marques Valdez of West Valley City, Novice 130 lbs., won his championship match by fall.

Winning freestyle silver were five competitors. Devin Johnson of Draper, Flyweight 40 lbs., won his second-place match by technical fall; Beau McRae of South Jordan, Flyweight 45 lbs., won his silver-medal match by technical fall; Travis McRae of South Jordan, Schoolboy (ages 13 and 14) 105 lbs., won his silver-medal match by decision, with a score of 9-4; and Jordan Layton of Clearfield, Cadet (ages 15 and 16) 125 lbs., won his second-place match by fall. Also winning silver was Jessica Osborne of Salt Lake City, Junior (ages 17 and 18) 112 lbs.

Taking freestyle bronze were seven athletes: first-year wrestler Garrick Kilpack of Sandy, Flyweight 35 lbs.; first-year wrestler Jordan Harbaugh of South Jordan, Flyweight 40 lbs.; first-year wrestler Cole Moody of West Jordan, Flyweight 45 lbs.; Skylar Orton of Midvale, Bantam 45 lbs.; Tyler Jensen of West Valley City, Novice 60 lbs.; Dylan Carlson of Kearns, Schoolboy 120 lbs; and Danny Huntsman of West Jordan, Junior 125 lbs.

Of the 10 Greco-Roman tournament medals earned, four were gold. Kyler Machan, Midget 55 lbs., won his championship match by technical fall, with a score of 11-1; Travis McRae, Schoolboy 105 lbs., won his championship match by fall; and Danny Huntsman, Junior 125 lbs., won his championship match by fall. Also winning gold was Dylan Carlson, Schoolboy 120 lbs.

Winning Greco-Roman silver medals were William Kilpack, Midget 65 lbs.; and Daniel Bactista of Kaysville, Novice 80 lbs.

Winning Greco-Roman bronze were four athletes: Ray Hinnen of West Jordan, Novice 75 lbs.; Tyler Jensen, Novice 60 lbs.; Jordan Layton, Cadet 125 lbs.; and Jessica Osborne, Junior 112 lbs.

Also competing from Mountain Top Wrestling Club in the freestyle tournament were Benjamin De La Cruz of West Valley City; first-year wrestler Cooper Goff of Murray, Flyweight 45 lbs.; first-year wrestler Tyler Crowther of Sandy, Flyweight 55 lbs.; first-year wrestler Cole Clark of South Jordan, Bantam 45 lbs; Riley Tatum of West Jordan, Bantam 45 lbs.; Colten Remington of South Jordan, Midget 70 lbs.; Ray Hinnen, Novice 75 lbs.; first-year wrestler Cyle Brown of West Valley City, Novice 85 lbs.; and Camn Brown of West Valley City, Schoolboy 100 lbs. Also competing in the Greco-Roman tournament was Wesly Orton, Novice 60 lbs. Also competing in both tournaments was Bryce Lindsey of Clearfield, Cadet 105 lbs.

"There was a lot of progress made this last week," said Coach Bill Kilpack (Jr.). "It was a much larger and more competitive tournament than last weekend, but we had wrestlers who didn't medal last week step up for this one. It's very gratifying as a coach to have the kids learn and improve each tournament. It just goes to show that the tournaments are where the real growth occurs, implementing what they've learned. We're very proud of them."
