It was determination, hard work and experience that took
North Sevier High School's wrestling team to the
championship Thursday night.
How the meet was scored changed from the last two
years.
"This year we only counted the highest scorer for
each school at each weight, like we will do at state,"
North Sevier coach George Chappell said. "We have been
working harder than most teams for several years, and
this year the team has really worked and practiced hard.
The wrestlers are in great shape and have lots of
confidence in their abilities."
Manti was second place followed by Richfield in third
and South Sevier in fourth.
The future also looks good for the Wolves with only
four seniors on the team. Chappell said the four seniors
are the powerhouses that the team depends on to win
every match.
"The younger kids work to keep up with them,"
Chappell said.
The seniors include Brock Morrison, who took the
individual title in the 189-pound division. Senior
Jeremy Abrams won the 171-pound weight class. Seniors
Kiley Sanders (145) and Colton Camp (152) also helped
the Wolves to the team title with wins.
Sophomores Alan Sorenson (160), David Porras (112),
and junior Kelby Bosshardt (125) also nabbed first place
finishes for the Wolves.
Wade Chappell (103) scored a second place finish for
the Wolves. Third place finishers for the Wolves include
Shane Sanders (103), Jace Tatum (119), Nathan Abrams
(130), Kasey Brunson (135), Levi Roundy (140), and
Michael James (275).
Josh Calton (152) placed fourth in his weight class.
Denton Mason (160) and Jeremy Crane (152) nabbed sixth
in their respective weight classes.
How other teams faired
Richfield
The Wildcats finished in third place, and for the
first time in three years were not the region champs.
"The other teams had some really strong wrestlers,"
Richfield coach Corey Morrison said. He said the scoring
system didn't allow the second man in each weight class
from each school to be scored, which may have ratcheted
up Richfield's team finish. However, the Wildcats are
taking 19 wrestlers to the state tournament, more than
any other Region 12 school, Morrison said.
Richfield was led by heavyweight Tyler Peterson, who
won the final match of the night.
Second place finishers for Richfield include Jason
Farnsworth (125), Jason Dayzie (145), and Chris Lyon
(215). Third place finishers for Richfield included Lane
Jacobsen (160), and Kade Colby (189).
Coming in with fourth place finishes for Richfield
were Jayson Johns (160), Clint Winkel (171), Zach Card
(189), and Preston Waters (215).
Coming up with fifth place finishes for the 'Cats
were Seth Rollins (103), Rene Miramontes (112), Josh
John (119), Armin Miramontes (135), Tyler Foisy (152),
and Jesse Nordgren (171).
Sixth place men for Richfield were Kade Winkel (103),
Travis Begay (112), Chase Nay (152), and Stetson Laws
(275).
South Sevier
The Rams came up with a fourth place finish after a
tough year. The Rams lost their heavyweight, Danny
Peterson, to an accident. Other key individuals
sustained injuries during the year, making it a season
where the Rams had to fight for every point scored on
the mat.
Fight they did.
In an emotional moment for South Sevier fans, Zack
Brown and Jeff Lundgren faced off for the 130-pound
title. Brown won the match to lead the Rams.
Josh Grant (160) scored a second place finish in his
division. Kiley Jensen (152) nabbed third place.
Fourth place finishers for South Sevier included
Landon Black (112), Shawn Lindsay (125), Spencer Lindsay
(135), and Wrex Lindsay (145).
Jimothy Boone (140) placed fifth in his division.
Dylan Waters (189), and Troy Jensen (215) placed sixth
for the Rams.
