The Viewmont Vikings are the reigning Region 1 and 5A
state wrestling champions. This year was supposed to be
a rebuilding year. Someone didn’t deliver the memo
because Viewmont’s right back on top after winning the
Region 1 wrestling tournament this past week at Viewmont.
The Vikes ended up cruising to the victory with 325
overall team points. Davis, who recently beat Viewmont
head to head and was considered by many as the team to
beat in 5A this year, came in a distant second tallying
267.5 team points. The overall standings ended up: 1.
Viewmont, 325. 2. Davis, 267.5. 3. Weber, 252.5. 4.
Northridge, 215. 5. Clearfield, 206. 6.Layton, 145. 7.
Fremont, 107.
Where Viewmont really dominated was in
the middle weight-classes ranging from 112 to 152
pounds. Mason Milligan also helped the Vikings control
the 215-pound weight-class. Here is how each
weight-class championship fared.
103 lbs.
Rhett Keaton of Davis defeated Casey Brunson of
Clearfield in a 10-3 decision to win the region crown in
the 103-pound weight-class. 1- Keaton (D), 2- Brunson
(CL), 3- Gunther (V), 4- Gardner (W), 5- Bench (N), 6-
Mann (D).
112 lbs.
Shay Warren of Weber is back for another run at the
state title after pinning and defeating his main Region
One rival, Viewmont’s Casey Smoot, for the 112-pound
league title. 1- Warren (W), 2- Smoot (V), 3- Betts (N),
4- Jackson (V), 5- Stanger (CL), 6- McKay (D).
119 lbs.
Spencer Smoot got to the championship match against
Davis’ Josh Baker by winning his semifinal match by
virtue of Wayndon Veater’s (Weber) disqualification.
Smoot of Viewmont didn’t use that as a crutch and
defeated Baker in the championship match 9-4 on
decision. 1- Smoot (V), 2- Baker (D), 3- Crow (CL), 4-
Godfrey (V), 5- James Ito (N), 6- Veater (W).
125 lbs.
Aaron Ross of Weber and Richard Winger of Viewmont
put on a pretty good show in the championship match, but
Ross was just too much for Winger in the 10-5 decision
victory for the Warrior. 1- Ross (W), 2- Winger (V), 3-
Hummel (CL), 4- Spencer Ito (N), 5- Hancock (F), 6-
Parke (D).
130 lbs.
Davis’ Sean Porter dominated this weight-class and
goes into the state tournament as the favorite to defend
his 2004 state wrestling crown.
The sophomore defeated Northridge’s Cole Unsworth
10-4 by decision to win the region title. 1- Porter (D),
2- Unsworth (N), 3- Ellsworth (CL), 4- Larsen (V), 5-
Stanger (CL), 6- Byington (V).
135 lbs.
Shay Lawrence of Viewmont was also dominating in his
performances on his way to the region title over Davis’
Todd Squires on a 6-2 decision.
Lawrence will also be defending his 2004 state title
this weekend at UVSC. 1- Lawrence (V), 2- Squires (D),
3- Moat (L), 4- O’Dell (W), 5- Timothy (V), 6-Rigby (N).
140 lbs.
Northridge senior Jake Bastian came in and showed why
he’s prepared to improve on his sixth place finish in
the 2004 state tournament with a big pin victory over
Weber’s Lew Woolsey for the Region One title. 1- Bastian
(N), 2- Woolsey (W), 3- Mann (V), 4- Toone (F), 5-
McCarty (D), 6- Francom (F).

Viewmont’s Dylan Nelson defeated Davis’ Kyler McCarty
by a very close decision of 9-7 to win the league crown.
1- Nelson (V), 2- McCarty (D), 3- Burgener (CL), 4-
Hubbard (W), 5- Stenquist (D), 6- Cooney (W).
152 lbs.
David Wiser of Viewmont handled J.D. Langston of
Fremont handily in the championship match. Langston was
13-14 overall coming into the title round and performed
admirably in the region meet. 1- Wiser (V), 2- Langston,
3- Evans (D), 4- Rampton (CL), 5- Martin (W), 6-
McKinney (N).
160 lbs.
Davis senior Jake Schwab won a close 4-2 decision
over Kendall Raddon of Northridge. 1- Schwab (D), 2-
Raddon (N), 3- Daniels (L), 4- Wild (N), 5- Tennis (L),
6- Scadden (V).
171 lbs.
Layton’s Ryan Moat won a great overtime decision over
Mark Dennis of Northridge for the championship. Moat’s
win didn’t come without some controversy though as fans
and coaches alike on the Northridge side disputed the
win with the officials for several minutes after the
match ended.
The displeasure from the Northridge faithful was in
fact so loud that one of the parents was asked to leave
the arena and the Knights were deducted one overall team
point for the parental outrage. 1- Moat (L), 2- Dennis
(N), 3- Taylor (D), 4- Krebs (F), 5- Johnson (V), 6-
White (D).
189 lbs.
Weber junior Jorge Lopez is looking to improve on his
2004 third place state finish. His 10-4 decision victory
over Tyson Reed of Layton was Lopez’s first step in
winning the 2005 state title. 1- Lopez (W), 2- Reed (L),
3- Tracy (W), 4- Kearsley (CL), 5- Johnson (D), 6-
Holgreen (V).
215 lbs.
Josh Skoglie of Weber is one of the best stories of
this year’s Utah state championships. He is deaf and
continually got support in sign language from the Weber
sidelines while defeating Viewmont’s Mason Milligan 5-3
for the Region One crown. 1- Skoglie (W), 2- Milligan
(V), 3- Bench (CL), 4- Baker (N), 5- Ellis (V), 6-
Humphreys (CL).

Austin Curtis of Layton was pretty much in control of
the championship match against Jaden Briskey of Weber
the entire time. The senior Lancer ended up winning 9-2
on decision. 1- Curtis (L), 2- Briskey (W), 3- Mortensen
(V), 4- Ray (L), 5- Garcia (CL), 6- Oram (F).
The state championships will be held this weekend at
the McKay Events Center in Orem on the UVSC campus.
