This year Carbon has the largest team, likely, in the
history of the school. There are over 40 wrestlers in
the room daily, all working extremely hard. The team
includes eight seniors who are leading the way, showing
the three juniors, 20 sophomores and 11 freshmen the
ropes.
Both junior highs sent a good group of young
wrestlers to the high school this year ready to move up
to high school competition. Coaches Phil Howa and Brock
Fausett do great jobs of teaching the basics, preparing
their wrestlers for high school wrestling.
The 3-A division is easily the toughest division in
Utah. In fact it is so tough that this year, it includes
three wrestlers who are currently considered the best
wrestlers at their weight in the entire United States.
Last Wednesday night Carbon traveled to North Sanpete
High sporting a 1-1 record having defeated fourth ranked
Lehi but losing a close battle to third ranked Delta.
The JV wrestlers did an excellent job against North
Sanpete, winning 18 of 24 matches. It was an impressive
win since Carbon hasn’t defeated North Sanpete’s JV in
many years. The varsity was extremely close as both
teams were able to win seven of the 14 matches, with
North Sanpete taking a come from behind, 36-35 decision.
The winners for Carbon were Steven Scow, Courtney Ivory,
Dustin Howa, Zack Burdick, Dallen McFarlane, Tim Lasslo,
Aaron Steffanoff and Nick Deeter.
Friday and Saturday Carbon was at the Uintah
Tournament of Champions. This year there were 29 teams
from Colorado and Wyoming as well as Utah. Carbon was
able to finish a respectable eighth place with Trent
Greenhalgh pinning a tough Delta wrestler in the finals.
Also placing for Carbon were; Zack Burdick second,
Dustin Howa and Dallen McFarlane third, Ryan Leonard
fifth and Tyson Herrick eighth. Coach Dave Smith was
also pleased to have five JV wrestlers and 10 varsity
wrestlers make it to round four. That was more than any
other team entered in the tournament.
Next up for Carbon is a vastly improved Emery High on
Wednesday at Carbon High. Emery’s squad won Carbon’s
Duel meet tournament early in the season so it should be
a great contest. Carbon’s wrestlers are ready and
confident they can turn the tables this time around.
Then on Thursday, Carbon will take on Altamont, the
defending and top ranked wrestling team in the l -A this
year at Carbon High. Times for both meets will be 5:30
p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for the varsity.
