SALT LAKE CITY — The Viewmont Vikings showed why they
are the two-time defending state champions in wrestling
this past Thursday night against Fremont in Bountiful.
The Vikings showed no mercy on the Silver Wolves en
route to a 60-10 team victory. The Davis Darts are
considered by many to be the team to beat in Regions 1
and 5A this year. But, the Vikings are poised to battle
the Darts in every way. They showed Fremont why nobody
should take them lightly.
Out of the 15 different weight classes, Viewmont lost
only three of the matches in the meet. And of those 12
Viewmont wins, eight came by way of pin victories.
The three Viking wrestlers to lose were Ryan Larsen,
Matt Mann and Ryan Scadden. Here’s how the matches
unfolded:
103 lbs. Josh Gunther (V) v. Tom Myers (F).
Gunther jumped out to an early two-point lead in the
first round. He continued to control the match well into
the second round. After increasing his points lead to
10-0 in the second round, Gunther got the pin victory
over Myers with 41 seconds remaining in the round.
Win: Gunther (V)
112 lbs. Tyson Jackson (V).
Jackson got the evening off as he won by forfeit over
the Silver Wolves.Win: Jackson (V)
119 lbs. Spencer Smoot (V) v. Zach Hancock (F).
This one was a little more competitive than the
Gunther-Myers match, even though the result was almost
identical. Smoot built up a 4-0 lead by the end of the
first round until Hancock was awarded two points at the
end of the round by virtue of a great two-point reversal
move. Smoot came out determined in the second round and
was controlling Hancock when he got Hancock in a
difficult position and pinned the Silver Wolf with 47
seconds left in the second round. Win: Smoot (V)
125 lbs. Richard Winger (V) v. Dave Robell (F).
Robell came out and took control of Winger early.
Robell took a narrow 3-2 point lead into the second
round when Winger turned it on. With Winger gaining
momentum, the Viking got the Silver Wolf in a pin
position for nearly 30 seconds when Robell was finally
whistled for the pin with 46 seconds remaining in the
second round.
Win: Winger (V)
130 lbs. Ryan Larsen (V) v. Forrest Snyder (F).
This is when Fremont finally got on the scoreboard.
This one was a very competitive match from the opening
whistle. Snyder was in control late in the first round
and took a 7-0 lead into the second. The match ended up
going the distance as Larsen held firm in the second
round but could manage only a single earned point in the
second. Snyder looked to be coasting in the third round
as he won by decision 12-2. Win: Snyder (F)
135 lbs. Travis Timothy (V) v. Logan Storey (F).
Timothy was in control for much of this match. Storey
found himself down 2-0 going into the second when the
deficit to Timothy ballooned to 6-1 heading into the
third round. It didn’t take long for Timothy to beat
Storey in the third as he pinned Storey only 40 seconds
into the third round. Win: Timothy (V)
140 lbs. Matt Mann (V) v. Mike Toone (F).
This was probably the best match of the night. Mann
looked to have the momentum early on as he held a 5-2
points lead going into the second round.
Mann increased his lead to 7-4 towards the end of the
second round when Toone was rewarded for some beautiful
wrestling the final 20 seconds of the round and went
into the third up 9-7.
Mann never recovered from the five-point flurry of
Toone and couldn’t muster anything in the rubber round
to lose 10-7 to the Silver Wolf.
Win: Toone (F)
145 lbs. Devin Nelson (V) v. Dennis Meacham (F).
This match was never in jeopardy for Nelson. The
Viking cruised in every round as he took a 5-0 lead into
the second and then increased it to 7-0 heading into the
third round.
Meacham got his first point of the match at the
beginning of the final round but never got any closer
than that. Nelson increased his lead to 11-2 and wound
up winning by decision 15-2. Win: Nelson (V)
152 lbs. David Wiser (V) v. JD Langston (F).
Wiser had no competition from Langston throughout
this one. Much like the Nelson match before this, Wiser
cruised to a major decision victory in this one also.
Langston never recorded a point in this one and
eventually lost by technical fall in the third round
when he was already down 16-0 to Wiser.
Win: Wiser (V)
160 lbs. Ryan Scadden (V) v. Wendell Woolsey (F).
This was also a great match for the meet. Both
wrestlers went wire to wire before Woolsey pulled out
the win in overtime.
Scadden built up a comfortable 6-2 lead in the third
round when Woolsey made his move to force the overtime
round.
Two different two-point moves in the final two
minutes tied the match up for Woolsey to force the
overtime.
Woolsey got the first awarded points of the sudden
death overtime and pulled out the victory 7-6.
Win: Woolsey (F)
171 lbs. Dan Johnson (V) v. Travis Krebs (F).
This match was also a doozy. Johnson found himself
down 3-2 heading into the third and final round against
Krebs. The match was low scoring, but it showed the
wrestling skill of both competitors.
Johnson tied up the match early in the third round
with a one-point escape at the 1:45 mark. With one
minute remaining, Johnson recorded a huge two-point
takedown on Krebs and all Krebs could get was one more
point to close out the match a 5-4 loser.
Win: Johnson (V)
189 lbs. Chase Hansen (V) v. Matt Judge (F).
Hansen was in control for much of this match. Hansen
would eventually increase his point’s lead to 7-0 when
Judge made a mini comeback to 7-4 in the second round.
Judge found himself down 9-4 in the third round when
Hansen pinned him with 51 seconds left in the round for
the win.
Win: Hansen (V)
215 lbs. Mason Milligan (V) v. Brad Judge (F).
Milligan showed that he was not only an
uncontrollable force on the gridiron this season, but he
is also very tough to handle on a wrestling mat.
Milligan appeared to be toying with Judge as he carried
a 5-0 point lead with him into the second round.
That lead increased to 7-0 when a Milligan pin ended
the match with 1:40 left to wrestle in the second round.
Win: Milligan (V)
275 lbs. Chris Mortensen (V) v. JC Oram (F).
Oram had no chance in this one.
Mortensen got two quick points in the first round and
ended up pinning Oram just 57 seconds into the opening
round for the victory.
Win: Mortensen (V).
