Davis High Wins Viewmont Wrestling Tourney
by Andy Crow

BOUNTIFUL —The Viewmont Vikings have been the top dog in 5A wrestling for the last few years. The Davis Darts have played second fiddle to the Vikings in Region 1 these past few years. Maybe now, the shoe is on the other foot, as the Darts won the Viewmont Wrestling Invitational last weekend by beating the number one ranked Vikings 223.5 to 207.5 in Bountiful.

Davis placed the most wrestlers in the finals round with five. Viewmont put three of their own in the finals, which was the third most from any school behind Bingham’s four entrants.

Out of the Darts’ five finalists, three of them, Rhett Keaton, Sean Porter and Kyler McCarty, won. One of Viewmont’s finalists, Tyson Jackson, came away victorious.

One Davis County wrestler of note who continued his undefeated ways was Bountiful’s Cam George. The senior dominated the 135-pound weight class on his way to a 15-7 victory over Davis wrestler Todd Squires in the finals round.

Riverton’s Michael Watts was named the lower weights outstanding wrestler of the tournament and Brighton’s Talan Knox was chosen the upper weights outstanding wrestler.

Here is how all the finals turned out:

103 lbs. Rhett Keaton (Davis) v. Mitch Moss (Bingham).

This match started out very evenly matched with Keaton getting the first points nearly one minute into the first round. Keaton began to take control of the match in the second round and cruised to a 7-1 point victory in three full rounds. Win: Keaton (D)

112 lbs. Tyson Jackson (Viewmont) v. Jesse Clark (Bingham).

Jackson held a narrow 2-0 lead heading into the second round. Clark eventually fell behind Jackson 7-0 in the third round when he got the score to 7-3 with over one minute remaining to make things interesting. Jackson countered with a one-point escape to increase the lead to 8-3, which is where it stayed. Win: Jackson (V)

119 lbs. Michael Watts (Riverton) v. Spencer Smoot (Viewmont).

Watts came out strong against Smoot and never gave up. After building a 5-0 point lead over Smoot in the second round, Smoot succumbed and lost the match by pin to Watts.Win: Watts (R)

125 lbs. K.C. Nate (Bright-on) v. Richard Winger (Viewmont).

Nate and Winger both went head to head and the winner came down to the final minute of this match. Winger came from behind to eventually take a 5-3 lead in the third round with a little under two minutes remaining. Nate came back strong and got the tight win 8-6. Win: Nate (B)

130 lbs. Sean Porter (Davis) v. Trace Vanorden (Layton).

Porter, only a sophomore and the reigning state champion, dominated this match from start to finish. Vanorden fell behind 14-2 going into the third round and held on throughout to make the round respectable before losing 19-4. Win: Porter (D)

135 lbs. Cam George (Bountiful) v. Todd Squires (Davis).

George was in control of this one from the start. The 15-7 decision victory in George’s favor ran his overall record to 14-0 this season and saw him sweep the 135-pound competition during the two-day tournament. Win: George (B)

140 lbs. Trevor Trowbridge (Bountiful) v. Cole Shafer (Brighton).

Shafer looked very impressive in this match.

The local hopeful Trow-bridge had a tough time getting any momentum, or points, against Shafer. Shafer built a 6-2 lead heading into the second round when Trowbridge wrestled tough in the second and was down only 8-2 going into the final round. From there, Shafer increased his lead and won 15-6 overall. Win: Shafer (B)

145 lbs. Aaron Olsen (Spanish Fork) v. Kyler McCarty (Davis).

This was probably the best finals match of the day. Neither got any momentum going in either the first or second round.

McCarty carried a narrow 2-1 lead into the third round when Olsen picked up a huge two-point reversal call with 1:05 left in the third round to take a 3-2 points lead. McCarty got two one-point escape calls in the final 35 seconds and took the tight 4-3 win. Win: McCarty (D)

152 lbs. Trevor Park (River-ton) v. Ryan Moore (Bingham).

After about 15 minutes, this one finally ended with Moore taking a 5-4 double overtime victory. Win: Moore (B)

160 lbs. Talan Knox (Bright-on) v. Jake Schwab (Davis).

Knox won the outstanding wrestler, so logic would tell anybody that Schwab didn’t have much of a chance. That’s exactly what happened and Knox won this by a technical fall while leading 17-3 in the third round. Win: Knox (B)

171 lbs. Phillip Rutledge (Mtn. Crest) v. Kerry Crandall (Spanish Fork).

Rutledge got the lead early in this one. He never relinquished it and eventually built it into an 11-5 lead going into the third round. The lone Mustang finalist tacked on a few more third-round points to win this class 15-7 over Crandall. Win: Rutledge (MC)

189 lbs. Nathan Shepherd (Bingham) v. Jeff Webster (Taylorsville).

Both rivals, Shepherd got his shaky lead to 4-1 heading into the third round. That lead grew to 6-1 when Webster mounted a furious comeback that fell short at 6-3. Win: Shepherd (B)

215 lbs. Jake Sawin (Logan) v. Willis Ferguson (American Fork).

This was another marathon match that Sawin completely dominated, when the match wasn’t stopped for Ferguson blood timeouts. Sawin had tallied a 9-2 points lead with 1:17 left in the third round when he pinned Ferguson for the victory. Win: Sawin (L)

275 lbs. Nick Garcia (Clearfield) v. Austin Curtis (Layton).

The two biggest wrestlers of the entire meet didn’t do a lot of moving around in this one. Curtis built his points lead to 7-3 and seemed to cruise his way to a three-round victory over Region 1 rival Garcia. Win: Curtis (L).
