Utah Grapplers
Headed for Reno World Championships
One
hundred thirty-two Utah wrestlers are headed to Nevada to
compete in the Reno World Championships April 2–5, 2004,
at the Reno Events Center. The tournament, touted as one
of the toughest in the country, will host 2,492 athletes
in age groups 6 and Under to 18 and Under, to compete in
folkstyle wrestling.
“This
may be one of the biggest years for Reno Worlds because of
the domination of many Utah schools and clubs,” said Craig
LaMont, Kids Director for USA Wrestling Utah. “I estimate
that we should compete as one of the strongest states
overall.”
Athletes hail from all over Utah, including but not
limited to Bear River, Brigham City, Draper, Hyrum, Kamas,
Kaysville, Layton, Logan, Mapleton, Midvale, Ogden,
Payson, Provo, Riverton, Salt Lake City, Sandy, South
Jordan, Spanish Fork, Springville, Taylorsville, West
Jordan, and West Valley City.
Some
notable Utah competitors include
-
Michael Watts of Riverton, 18 and Under 112 lbs., 2004
Wrestling USA Magazine Utah high-school Junior Wrestler of
the Year, Special Mention in 2004 Wrestling USA Magazine
national junior rankings, and two-time high school state
champion
-
Nathaniel Holt of Provo, 15 and Under, 135 lbs., 2003–2004
high-school season Wrestler to Watch on UtahWrestling.org,
and 2004 no. 6-ranked sophomore in Wrestling USA Magazine
national rankings, and 2004 silver medals in high-school
state championships
-
Josh

high-school season Wrestler to Watch on UtahWrestling.org
-
Shay
Lawrence of Bountiful, a 2004 high-school state champion

national junior rankings

These
are in addition to the younger competitors, such as
two-time freestyle state champion and two-time Greco-Roman
state champion Ky Lucero of Sandy, 15 and Under 115 lbs.;
two-time freestyle state champion and two-time freestyle
state silver medalist William Kilpack of Sandy, 7 and 8 58
lbs.; freestyle and Greco-Roman state champion Carlin
Kennelly of Salt Lake City, 15 and Under 101 lbs.;
freestyle state champion Connor Crandall of Kamas, 7 and 8
64 lbs.; Greco-Roman state champion Austin Wilson of South
Jordan, 9 and 10 85 lbs.; and freestyle and Greco-Roman
state silver medalist Cody Wharton of West Valley City, 11
and 12 73 lbs.
“They
say this is one of those tournaments that you have to go
to at least once,” said Bill Kilpack (III), Utah Editor
for Wrestling USA Magazine and coach of Jordan Freestyle
Wrestling, a Sandy-based youth wrestling program through
Salt Lake County Recreation. “We have a very young team
this year, with half the wrestlers being 8 and under, but
we’re still taking eight kids to compete. A few of them
have a real shot at placing, if not taking gold medals.”
LaMont said, “The tournament is fantastic. Thousands of
wrestlers compete and the atmosphere is amazing. The
referees are great and every session starts on the minute.
Opening ceremonies include fireworks, a parade and
dignitaries. This tournament is top-notch and very
organized. One of the primary drawbacks for Utahans,
however, is that there a many who will not attend due to
the fact that the finals are on Sunday.”
