Outstanding Freshman Wrestlers for 2006–2007

Raider Lofthouse
Mountain Crest High School, 112 lbs.
School Classification: 4A
|
|
|
Raider destroys opponents
— he beats them down and reduces them to nothing. His brothers,
every one of them, are just monsters, but Raider is meaner.
I have a nephew who had to wrestle Raider and Ethen both,
and Ethen was satisfied with dominating his opponent —
Raider wanted to dominate, but make sure you left the mat
limping, to boot. He took state as a freshman, going
34-3 after pinning his way through the tournament. He hits the toughest tournaments in the country and comes
back a winner almost as often as Ethen. He's taken state in Greco-Roman each of the last
four years and three of the last four years in freestyle,
that one runner-up finish coming behind Colby Barlocker. He
won a national title at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in
Denver, and finished sixth at the NHSCA Freshman Nationals
in Virginia Beach. This kid's
got the stuff.
2007 State
Champion as a freshman (103 lbs.). Career
Interscholastic Record: 34-3.

Cody Thornton
South Summit High School, 103 lbs.
GPA: 3.7
School Classification: 2A (410 enrolled) |
 |
|
Cody Thornton
is a finisher. As a freshman, he finished the season
with a 40-9 record with 30 pins, until he met Millard's
Kamron Day in the finals, who forced him to an 11-6
decision to win the title. He was also the champ for
Division B, the High Country Classic and the 2A Duals.
He represented the 1A/2A team at the All-Star Duals as a
freshman, and represented Utah in the all-star dual
against the Ohio All-Stars in 2006.
I used to coach against this kid, and he consistently
pulled ahead of one of my best wrestlers. He's
smart, he's tough, and he's the real deal. His
sophomore year promises to be even more stellar than his
first in the high-school ranks.

Bryson Foy
Altamont High School, 130 lbs.
GPA: 3.5
School Classification: 1A (200 enrolled) |
 |
|
Bryson is a
tough, solid wrestler who keeps coming at you, no matter
what he might be hit with. He's skilled and, at the
same time, has that mental toughness that makes all the
difference in the tough matches. He took state as a
freshman at 119 pounds, beating Wayne's Jeffrey Stephenson
14-11 in the finals (we all know how tough Stephenson is)
but, before that, he beat a state runner-up from the
previous year, Derek Hererra of Duchesne 6-2. The
state title in high school followed on two junior-high
state championships, as well as being named Outstanding
Wrestler at 1A/2A/3A Junior High State Championships in
2006. In 2006, he finished third at the U.S.
Folkstyle Nationals behind two talented kids, Spanish
Fork's Kaleb Ashworth and Payson's Brock Brown. He won
his region in high school and will undoubtedly continue
his winning ways his sophomore year.
2007 State
Champion as a freshman (119 lbs.). Career
Interscholastic Record: 48-3 with 29 pins.
Following is a
summary of Bryson's wrestling career so far:
-
High School State Champion (as a freshman)
-
High School Region Champion (as a freshman)
-
Two-Time Junior

Kaleb Ashworth
Spanish Fork High School, 125 lbs.
GPA: 4.0
School Classification: 5A (1,500 enrolled) |
 |
|
|
|
Ashworth is a
solid technician with a lot of heart but, above all, he
always wrestles smart. He's one of those that you
can see the gears turning all the time that he's on the
mat but, when push comes to shove, he's got the moxy to
mix it up with anybody. He had a great freshman
year, winning the Region IV championship and, in the
doing, being named the Outstanding Wrestler for the lower
weights. His state tournament was strong, losing
only to Bingham's Ryker Vandertoolen (who ended up in the
finals), Weber's Derek Malan 4-1, and an overtime loss to
Fremont's Matt Finger. But his sophomore year will
come out stronger, especially after all the summer
wrestling he did. He won a national title in
folkstyle last summer in Butte at the AAU Grand Nationals,
was the runn-erup He won the U.S.
Folkstyle Nationals in 2005, then came up short defending
his title in 2006 against Brock Brown of Payson in the
finals. He took sixth at the Rocky Mountain National
Championships in March 2006 after a pretty serious finger
injury that ended his day. He was a real standout at the 4A/5A Junior High State Championships, where he
took the title with a win over that monster Raider Lofthouse of Mountain Crest. That made it a
no-brainer for Kaleb to be named the Outstanding Wrestler
for the Junior High Division.
Following is a
summary of Kaleb's wrestling career so far:
-
2007 6th Place, High School State Championships (as a
freshman)
-
2007 Champion, Region IV
-
2007 Outstanding Wrestler, Region IV, Lower Weights
-
2007 6th Place, Rocky Mountain Rumble
